Chapter 3 - DON’T TAKE THE SHORTCUT

Ethan was driving home through rural Pennsylvania when his GPS suddenly redirected him.

The new route was seven minutes shorter.

He followed it.

A few miles later, he passed an old woman standing beside the road.

She was wearing a long gray coat.

As Ethan drove past, she raised one hand.

Not waving.

Pointing.

At the road behind him.

Ethan checked his rearview mirror.

She was gone.

Then his GPS said:

“Turn around.”

Ethan laughed nervously.

“No chance.”

The GPS repeated it.

“Turn around.”

He ignored it.

A mile later, a fallen tree completely blocked the road.

Ethan stopped.

There was no way through.

He turned around.

When he passed the spot again, the old woman was standing there.

This time, she was facing the road.

Ethan slowed down.

She was gone before he reached her.

He later learned the road had been closed that night because of a dangerous landslide.
