Emily couldn’t understand.
Carter looked at the lawyers.
“Tell her.”
One lawyer opened a folder.
“Mr. Carter is the controlling owner of the investment group acquiring your company.”
Emily’s face went pale.
“No.”
Carter remained silent.
She looked at the documents.
His name was there.
The man she had believed was destroyed after bankruptcy had quietly rebuilt his wealth.
He had spent years investing through private companies and funds.
He had stayed out of the public eye.
And now…
He had returned.
Emily walked toward him.
“Carter, please.”
He raised his hand.
“Don’t.”
“I can explain.”
“I know.”
“I was young.”
“You were.”
“I made mistakes.”
“You made choices.”
Emily’s eyes filled with tears.
“You can’t destroy everything I’ve built.”
Carter looked directly at her.
“I didn’t build your company.”
Emily froze.
“You did that yourself.”
Then he opened another folder.
