Chapter 12 - THE PERSON SHE FIRED
Emily eventually discovered something else.
Mia was no longer unemployed.
Carter had hired her.
And Mia had become part of the management team rebuilding Carter’s business.
Emily couldn’t believe it.
She called Mia.
Mia answered.
“Hello?”
“I heard you’re working for Carter.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because he gave me a chance.”
Emily went silent.
Mia continued:
“Just like he once gave you one.”
Emily’s voice became bitter.
“You think you’re better than me?”
“No.”
Mia paused.
“I think I learned something you didn’t.”
“What?”
“That helping someone doesn’t make you weak.”
Emily had no answer.
Mia continued:
“You thought money made you powerful.”
“It didn’t.”
“You were powerful because people trusted you.”
“And you spent that trust.”
Emily hung up.
For the first time, she understood that losing her company wasn’t the only punishment.
