Chapter 7 - THE SECOND VICTIM

Inside the building, Mia had watched everything.

Mia was one of Emily’s employees.

Unlike most people, she wasn’t impressed by money.

She followed Carter outside.

“Sir, wait.”

Carter turned around.

Mia offered him an umbrella.

“You shouldn’t be walking in the rain.”

Carter smiled.

“Thank you.”

Mia had heard about him.

She knew he had once built the company Emily worked for.

She also knew what had happened.

The next morning, Emily called Mia into her office.

“You followed that man?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because he needed help.”

Emily slammed a folder onto the desk.

“You work for me. You don’t spend company time helping strangers.”

“He’s not a stranger.”

Emily stared at her.

“You’re fired.”

Mia looked shocked.

“Because I helped an old man?”

“Because you forgot who signs your paycheck.”

Mia quietly removed her employee badge.

Before leaving, she looked at Emily.

“One day, you’ll understand the difference between power and character.”

Emily laughed.

“I don’t need advice from someone I just fired.”

Mia walked away.

Emily returned to her desk.

May you like

She had no idea that firing Mia would become one of the decisions she regretted most.
