Chapter 6 - THE MAN SHE PRETENDED NOT TO KNOW

Emily walked downstairs.

Through the glass doors, she saw Carter standing outside.

He looked completely different.

His expensive suits were gone.

His hair was gray.

His coat was old.

He looked tired.

Emily remembered the man who had once placed a business card beside her restaurant bill.

Carter smiled when he saw her.

“Emily.”

She walked outside.

“What do you want?”

“I don’t want anything.”

“Then why are you here?”

“I just wanted to see how you were doing.”

Emily glanced toward the employees watching through the windows.

She didn’t want them to know.

She pulled a hundred-dollar bill from her purse.

“Here.”

Carter looked at the money.

“I don’t need it.”

Emily forced a smile.

“Please take it.”

Carter shook his head.

“I didn’t help you so you could pay me back.”

Emily became irritated.

“Then what do you want?”

“Nothing.”

Carter looked at her.

“I only wanted to know whether you remembered.”

“Remembered what?”

“The girl you used to be.”

Emily looked away.

“That girl is gone.”

Carter nodded slowly.

“I can see that.”

He turned around and walked away.

Emily watched him disappear into the rain.

She felt nothing.

At least, that’s what she told herself.
