Chapter 4 - “BUSINESS IS BUSINESS”

Carter called Emily into his office.

She walked in confidently.

Carter placed the documents on the desk.

“Is this your company?”

Emily looked at the papers.

“Yes.”

“You’ve been taking my investors.”

Emily didn’t deny it.

“I gave them another option.”

“I gave you an opportunity,” Carter said quietly.

Emily’s expression hardened.

“You gave me a job.”

Carter stared at her.

“I gave you much more than that.”

Emily stood up.

“I worked for everything I have.”

Carter’s voice remained calm.

“I know you worked hard. That’s why I believed in you.”

For the first time, Emily looked uncomfortable.

But instead of apologizing, she said:

“Business is business.”

Carter looked at her for several seconds.

“After everything I did for you?”

Emily answered:

“You can’t expect me to stay small just because you helped me get started.”

That sentence broke something between them.

Emily walked out.

Within months, more investors left Carter.

His company could no longer survive.

The company he had spent decades building was forced into bankruptcy.

Employees lost their jobs.

Partners disappeared.

And Emily’s company grew.

The woman who once had nothing was now becoming rich.

But Carter’s words stayed with her.

“Character decides how far you go.”

May you like

Emily chose not to listen.
