Chapter 14 - THE LAST CONVERSATION
Emily finally walked inside.
Carter saw her.
Neither spoke for several seconds.
Emily whispered:
“I’m sorry.”
Carter looked at her.
“I know.”
“I destroyed everything.”
“No.”
Emily looked confused.
“You destroyed what you built.”
He paused.
“I only opened a door.”
Emily began crying.
“I became someone I don’t recognize.”
Carter answered:
“You became someone who forgot where she came from.”
Emily lowered her head.
“Can you forgive me?”
Carter thought for a moment.
“Forgiveness isn’t the same as trust.”
Emily nodded.
“I understand.”
Carter stood.
Before leaving, he placed another business card on the table.
Emily stared at it.
“What’s this?”
Carter smiled.
“A second chance.”
Emily looked shocked.
“But why?”
Carter answered:
“Because someone once gave me one.”
He walked away.
This time, Emily didn’t chase him.
