Chapter 1 - THE GIRL WITH NOTHING

Emily had never known what it felt like to have a normal family.

Her father spent most of his days drunk. Her mother was trapped in addiction and rarely noticed whether Emily had eaten or not.

By twenty, Emily had learned one thing: if she wanted something, she had to get it herself.

Every evening, she worked as a waitress at a small restaurant on the edge of the city.

She was exhausted most nights, but she never complained.

One rainy evening, an older man named Mr. Carter walked into the restaurant.

He was wealthy, but unlike most businessmen, he dressed simply.

Emily served him dinner.

Halfway through the meal, her hand slipped and a glass fell to the floor.

Emily froze.

“I’m sorry, sir. I’ll pay for it.”

Carter looked at her trembling hands.

“You don’t have to.”

He noticed the exhaustion in her eyes and asked, “Why are you working this hard?”

Emily hesitated.

Then she told him about her family.

Carter listened without interrupting.

Before leaving, he placed a business card beside the check.

“If you ever want a different life, call me.”

Emily stared at the card.

“Why would you help me?”

Carter smiled.

“Someone once helped me.”

Then he walked out into the rain.

May you like

Emily had no idea that one small act of kindness would change both their lives.
