Chapter 5 - THE SELF-MADE WOMAN
Five years later, Emily was almost unrecognizable.
She lived in a luxury mansion.
She drove an expensive car.
Her company was worth tens of millions of dollars.
Magazines called her a brilliant young entrepreneur.
One headline described her as:
“THE SELF-MADE WOMAN WHO BUILT AN EMPIRE FROM NOTHING.”
Emily loved that headline.
She never corrected them.
She never mentioned Carter.
She never mentioned the business card.
She never mentioned the job.
And she certainly never mentioned the investors she had taken from him.
Whenever someone asked about her success, Emily gave the same answer:
“I built everything myself.”
Her employees admired her confidence.
But many were afraid of her temper.
Emily had become obsessed with status.
She judged people by their clothes, cars, and bank accounts.
She believed poor people simply weren’t trying hard enough.
Then one rainy afternoon, something happened that she never expected.
Security called her.
“There’s an older man outside asking for you.”
“Who?”
“He says his name is Carter.”
