Chapter 9 - THE VOICEMAIL

Jason received a voicemail from his wife while he was at work.

That wasn’t unusual.

Except his wife had died three months earlier.

He stared at the screen.

The voicemail was 14 seconds long.

He didn’t listen immediately.

He waited until he got home.

Then he pressed play.

At first, there was only static.

Then her voice.

Soft.

Almost a whisper.

“Jason… don’t go upstairs.”

He froze.

He lived alone.

There was no reason for anyone to be upstairs.

He called the police.

They searched the house.

Nothing.

Jason eventually went upstairs himself.

Everything looked normal.

Then he noticed something.

A window was open.

The curtains were moving in the wind.

He checked the voicemail again.

This time, there was another sound underneath her voice.

A faint knocking.

He counted.

Three knocks.

Exactly the same pattern from the house next door.

The next morning, Jason learned that his neighbor had died in his sleep that night.

The police estimated the time of death.

It was the exact time Jason received the voicemail.
