Chapter 1 - THE DOG WOULDN’T MOVE

Emily had owned Max for almost six years.
The golden retriever had always been the kind of dog who ran toward the front door whenever she grabbed her car keys.
But that afternoon, something was different.
Emily opened the driver’s door of her SUV and called him.
“Come on, Max.”
He walked down the porch.
Then stopped.
Emily smiled.
“What’s wrong?”
Max didn’t look at her.
He was staring at the road.
His ears were raised. His body was completely still.
Emily looked in the same direction.
Nothing.
Just a quiet suburban street on an ordinary afternoon.
She called him again.
“Max.”
He took one step backward.
Emily frowned.
She walked toward him and reached for his collar.
That’s when she heard it.
A distant engine.
At first, it sounded normal.
Then it became louder.
Much louder.
A black sedan came around the corner at terrifying speed.
The traffic light ahead was red.
The driver didn’t slow down.
The sedan crossed the intersection, jumped the curb and slammed directly into Emily’s parked SUV.
The impact was violent.
Glass exploded across the driveway.
The SUV was pushed several feet sideways.
Emily stood frozen.
Max hadn’t moved.
He simply watched the wreck.
Emily looked down at him.
“Did you know?”
That night, she watched the security camera footage.
She expected to see the car coming.
She didn’t.
The camera showed Max standing perfectly still for seven seconds before the sedan appeared.
There had been no horn.
No visible danger.
Nothing Emily could see.
She watched it again.
And again.
Seven seconds.
Every time.
Emily never found an explanation.
But after that day, whenever Max suddenly stopped and stared at something…
May you like
She stopped too.
