Chapter 9 - THE ENEMY INSIDE THE FAMILY

Daniel’s heart pounded.

The person standing in the doorway kept their face hidden.

“Who are you?”

No answer.

“Take off the mask.”

The person stepped forward.

Slowly.

Then removed it.

Daniel froze.

Because he knew him.

“Uncle Robert?”

The man smiled.

“Hello, Daniel.”

Robert Carter.

Evelyn’s younger brother.

A man Daniel hadn’t seen in years.

“What are you doing here?”

Robert looked at the box.

“Cleaning up a mistake.”

Daniel moved in front of it.

“You threatened my son.”

Robert laughed.

“Threatened?”

He shook his head.

“No, Daniel. I warned you.”

“You hurt Ethan.”

“No.”

Robert’s smile disappeared.

“Your mother did.”

Daniel stared.

“What?”

Robert looked toward the stairs.

“Your mother has been trying to protect everyone from the truth.”

“By hurting my child?”

“You don’t understand.”

Daniel stepped closer.

“I understand enough.”

Robert raised the weapon slightly.

Not pointing.

But enough.

“You really think Evelyn is the villain?”

Daniel said nothing.

Robert continued.

“She made terrible choices.”

“Terrible choices?”

“Yes.”

He looked around the house.

“But everything she did was because she was afraid.”

“Afraid of what?”

Robert’s face became serious.

“Afraid of people finding out what really happened the night your parents died.”

Daniel felt cold.

“My parents died?”

Robert looked away.

“You were told they disappeared.”

Daniel’s voice became quiet.

“What are you saying?”

“I’m saying your parents didn’t leave.”

A long silence followed.

Daniel felt like the entire world had shifted.

“What happened to them?”

Robert looked at the box.

“The answer is inside.”

Before Daniel could move, the front door opened.

Everyone turned.

Evelyn stood there.

Her face was different.

No anger.

No confidence.

Only fear.

“Robert.”

The man lowered his weapon slightly.

“You shouldn’t have come.”

Evelyn looked at Daniel.

“You finally know.”

Daniel stared at her.

“Tell me the truth.”

She said nothing.

“Tell me!”

Her eyes filled with tears.

And then she said the one sentence Daniel never expected to hear from her.

“I didn’t steal you.”

She paused.

“I saved you.”

Daniel shook his head.

“No more lies.”

Evelyn walked closer.

“I saved you because your parents were going to be killed.”

The room went silent.

Daniel looked between them.

“By who?”

Evelyn’s lips trembled.

Then she pointed at Robert.

“By him.”

Robert’s expression changed.

For the first time

He looked afraid.

Because Evelyn had just revealed something that could destroy him.

Daniel slowly turned toward his uncle.

And Robert whispered:

“She’s lying.”

But nobody believed him.

Because for the first time in thirty years
