Chapter 3 - THE CAMERA NOBODY KNEW ABOUT

The hospital hallway smelled like disinfectant and fear.

I sat beside Daniel while doctors checked Ethan.

Neither of us spoke.

Because both of us were thinking the same thing.

How could this happen inside our own family?

Finally, the doctor walked out.

“Your son is stable.”

I nearly collapsed from relief.

“But we need to run more tests.”

Daniel stood immediately.

“What happened?”

The doctor hesitated.

“We found something unusual.”

My heart dropped.

“What do you mean unusual?”

“There were traces of an ingredient that can cause stomach pain, dizziness, and nausea.”

Daniel’s hands tightened.

“What ingredient?”

The doctor looked serious.

“We need to confirm it first.”

That answer was enough.

Daniel knew.

I knew.

Someone had done something.

Later that night, we returned home.

The backyard was empty.

The broken plate was still there.

The stain from the dessert remained on the stone.

A reminder.

Daniel walked slowly toward the table.

“She lied.”

I looked at him.

“You think your mother did this?”

He didn’t answer.

Because the truth hurt too much.

Then I noticed him staring at the corner near the pantry door.

“What is it?”

He walked closer.

A tiny black camera was attached above the shelf.

My breath stopped.

“I forgot about that.”

“What?”

“The camera.”

Daniel looked at me.

“What camera?”

I swallowed.

“I installed it months ago.”

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

“Because it was supposed to be temporary.”

We rushed inside.

The footage loaded.

The screen showed the backyard.

Evelyn walking around.

Ethan sitting alone.

Then the moment everyone had been waiting for.

The tea.

Daniel leaned closer.

Nobody spoke.

The video played.

And then we saw it.

Evelyn looking around.

Checking if anyone was watching.

Then she reached into her pocket.

And dropped something into the glass.

Daniel stopped breathing.

My hand covered my mouth.

Because the camera had recorded everything.

But then something happened.

Something neither of us expected.

Evelyn looked directly at the camera.

Not accidentally.

Not by surprise.

Directly.

May you like

And she smiled.
