Chapter 4 - THE WOMAN WHO KNEW SHE WAS BEING WATCHED

The room went completely silent.
The video kept playing.
Evelyn stood beside the drink table, staring directly at the small camera hidden above the pantry door.
Then she smiled.
Not a nervous smile.
Not a confused smile.
A confident smile.
The kind of smile someone gives when they already know the outcome.
Daniel slowly turned toward me.
âShe knew.â
My voice was barely a whisper.
âShe knew about the camera.â
We watched the footage again.
This time slower.
Evelyn looked around the backyard.
She waited until nobody was close.
Then she reached into her pocket.
A small white packet appeared in her hand.
She opened it.
Dropped something into Ethanâs tea.
And stirred it.
But before walking away, she looked up.
Straight into the lens.
Then she smiled.
My stomach twisted.
âShe wanted us to find it,â Daniel said.
âWhat?â
âShe wanted us to think we caught her.â
I looked at him.
âWhy would someone do that?â
Daniel didnât answer.
Because he already knew.
His mother had spent years playing games with people.
She never moved without a reason.
Suddenly, my phone rang.
Unknown number.
I answered.
âHello?â
Silence.
Then a voice.
A voice I recognized.
Evelyn.
âYou two are watching the footage right now, arenât you?â
My blood went cold.
Daniel grabbed the phone.
âHow did you get this number?â
She laughed softly.
âDaniel, you always were too emotional.â
âWhere are you?â
âDoes it matter?â
âYou hurt my son.â
âNo.â
Her voice became sharper.
âYour son hurt himself.â
Daniel froze.
âWhat did you say?â
âI told him not to drink it.â
âThatâs a lie.â
âIs it?â
She paused.
Then continued.
âYou should be careful accusing people, Daniel. Sometimes the person who looks guilty isnât the one who loses.â
The call ended.
Daniel stared at the phone.
âSheâs threatening us.â
I looked at the camera footage again.
There was something bothering me.
âWait.â
Daniel looked at me.
âWhat?â
âGo back.â
I pointed at the screen.
âRight before she puts something in the tea.â
The video replayed.
Evelyn reached into her pocket.
But behind herâŠ
There was someone else.
Standing near the back door.
Watching.
A shadow.
A person we hadnât noticed before.
Daniel zoomed in.
The image became blurry.
But the shape was clear.
Someone had been there.
Someone else knew.
And that meant one terrifying possibility.
May you like
Evelyn might not have been acting alone.
