Chapter 14 - THE LAST SECRET

The room felt smaller.

The air felt heavier.

Daniel stared at Evelyn.

His entire life had been built on pieces of truth.

But now he realized something terrifying.

Everyone had been hiding something.

Even the people who claimed to protect him.

“Tell me everything.”

His voice was cold.

No emotion.

Just exhaustion.

Evelyn looked at Ethan.

Then at Daniel.

“I was young.”

Daniel shook his head.

“Don’t.”

“I made one terrible decision.”

“What decision?”

She looked down.

“I helped Robert cover up what happened.”

Daniel felt like the ground disappeared.

“You helped him?”

“I didn’t know he would hurt them.”

“But you helped him hide it.”

“Yes.”

The confession broke something between them.

Daniel looked away.

All his life, he had defended her.

Believed her.

Loved her.

Now he didn’t know what was real.

Robert stepped closer.

“See?”

He smiled.

“She was never innocent.”

Daniel looked at him.

“And you are?”

Robert’s smile faded.

“You don’t understand.”

“No.”

Daniel stepped forward.

“I understand perfectly.”

“You destroyed my family.”

Robert shook his head.

“Your family destroyed itself.”

Then he pressed a button on the remote.

A recording started playing.

A voice filled the room.

Daniel’s father.

Again.

But this time, the message was different.

“If anything happens to us, I need Daniel to know the truth.”

Daniel listened.

“Evelyn was involved.”

His heart stopped.

His father’s voice continued.

“But she was trying to protect Daniel.”

Daniel looked at Evelyn.

The recording continued.

“Robert is the real danger.”

Robert’s face changed.

Because he knew.

The recording exposed everything.

“You see?” Evelyn whispered.

“I tried to fix it.”

Daniel looked at her.

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

“Because I was afraid you would hate me.”

Daniel didn’t answer.

Because she was right.

He did hate what she had done.

But he also saw the pain in her eyes.

The regret.

The years of guilt.

Suddenly, Ethan spoke.

“Grandma
”

Everyone turned.

The little boy looked at Evelyn.

“Did you really save Daddy?”

Evelyn’s eyes filled with tears.

“Yes.”

“Then why did you hurt me?”

That question destroyed her.

She dropped her head.

“I don’t know.”

The honesty surprised everyone.

“I was scared.”

Ethan looked at her.

“Scared people still hurt others.”

Nobody spoke.

Because the child was right.

Then the sound of sirens came from outside.

Robert looked toward the window.

His expression changed.

“You called the police?”

Daniel looked at him.

“No.”

Evelyn slowly raised her phone.

“I did.”

Robert’s face turned angry.

“You betrayed me.”

Evelyn looked at him.

“No.”

She stepped forward.

“I finally stopped protecting you.”

Robert rushed toward the back exit.

Daniel followed.

But before Robert escaped, police surrounded the property.

“Robert Carter! Stop!”

For a moment, everyone thought it was over.

Then Robert smiled.

Because he still had one card left.

He looked directly at Daniel.

“You think you won?”

Daniel stared.

Robert laughed.

“You don’t know the full story.”

Daniel froze.

“What are you talking about?”

Robert looked at Ethan.

Then whispered:

“Ask your mother why your real father’s body was never found.”

The police grabbed him.

But the words remained.

May you like

Because one final mystery was still unanswered.
