Chapter 11 - UNDER THE BROKEN STONE

The next morning, Daniel stood in the backyard.
The same backyard where his son had cried.
The same place where the plate shattered.
The same place where everything began.
Evelyn stood beside him.
Neither of them spoke.
Finally, Daniel asked:
âWhy didnât you tell me?â
Evelyn looked down.
âBecause I was afraid.â
âYou raised me on a lie.â
âYes.â
The honesty surprised him.
She didnât defend herself.
She didnât make excuses.
âI was wrong.â
Daniel looked at her.
âDo you know how many years I spent wondering why I never felt like I belonged?â
Evelynâs eyes filled with tears.
âEvery day.â
âEvery day?â
She nodded.
âBecause I knew one day you would find out.â
Daniel looked away.
He wanted to hate her.
Part of him did.
But another part remembered the woman who raised him.
The woman who stayed when everyone else left.
The woman who held him when he was sick.
The woman who made him believe he was loved.
Then he remembered Ethan.
And the anger returned.
âYou hurt my son.â
Evelyn closed her eyes.
âI know.â
âWhy?â
âI didnât know it would affect him like that.â
âThatâs not an answer.â
She looked at him.
âThe tea wasnât meant to hurt him.â
Daniel froze.
âWhat?â
âI put something in it.â
The confession landed like a punch.
âBut?â
âBut it was supposed to make him sleep.â
Daniel stared.
âWhy?â
Evelyn looked toward the house.
âBecause I knew someone was watching him.â
âWhat?â
âI saw Robert near the house.â
Danielâs anger slowed.
âYouâre saying you were protecting him?â
âYes.â
âBy drugging him?â
Her face fell.
âNo excuse makes that right.â
For the first time, Daniel saw regret.
Real regret.
Then Evelyn walked toward the patio.
She pointed at a loose stone.
âYour father put it there.â
Daniel knelt.
His hands moved the stone.
Underneath was a small metal container.
Inside was a flash drive.
And a letter.
Daniel opened the letter first.
The handwriting was unfamiliar.
But the first line made his heart stop.
Dear Daniel, if you are reading this, then we failed to protect you.
His hands trembled.
He continued.
Your mother was right about one thing. She saved you. But she was wrong about another. She trusted the wrong person.
Daniel looked at Evelyn.
âWhat does this mean?â
She looked scared.
The flash drive.
The letter.
Everything.
It pointed to one person.
Robert.
Daniel inserted the flash drive into his laptop.
A video file appeared.
Created thirty years earlier.
He clicked play.
The screen showed his father.
Older.
Younger.
Alive.
Daniel stopped breathing.
His father looked directly into the camera.
âDaniel, if you are seeing this, something happened to us.â
A pause.
Then his father said:
âYour uncle Robert is not who he claims to be.â
Danielâs face changed.
The video continued.
âWe discovered the truth.â
A document appeared on screen.
Bank records.
Transfers.
Names.
Then one final sentence appeared.
ROBERT CARTER ORDERED THE ATTACK.
Daniel stood frozen.
Because the man who had spent the night blaming his motherâŠ
Was the person who had destroyed his family.
But before he could reactâŠ
The hospital called.
May you like
Ethan was gone.
