Chapter 2 - THE SECRET INSIDE THE GLASS

“Mom, what did you give him?”

Daniel’s voice was quiet.

Too quiet.

Everyone who knew him understood that was when he was most dangerous.

Evelyn rolled her eyes.

“Don’t look at me like that.”

“Answer the question.”

“It was tea.”

“What kind?”

“Normal tea.”

Daniel stared at her.

“You keep saying that.”

“Because it’s the truth.”

But Ethan was still holding his stomach.

His face had lost its color.

I dropped beside him.

“Sweetheart, tell Mommy exactly what happened.”

He looked at me.

His eyes were scared.

“She told me I was being rude.”

“When?”

“Before dinner.”

“And then?”

“She brought me the tea.”

Evelyn interrupted.

“Because he was acting disrespectful.”

Daniel turned toward her.

“Let him talk.”

Ethan continued.

“She said if I didn’t drink it, she would tell Daddy I was lying.”

My heart sank.

Daniel looked at his mother.

“Did you threaten him?”

“No.”

“Yes, you did.”

Evelyn laughed.

“This is ridiculous.”

Then she walked toward the table and picked up the glass.

“You’re acting like I poisoned him.”

Nobody spoke.

Because that word had already entered everyone’s mind.

Poisoned.

Evelyn placed the glass down.

“You all know me. I would never hurt my grandson.”

But the way she said it didn’t sound like reassurance.

It sounded like a warning.

Daniel stepped closer.

“Why was he crying?”

“Because he’s sensitive.”

“Why did you kick his plate?”

“He threw a tantrum.”

Ethan looked up.

“I didn’t.”

His tiny voice cut through the yard.

“I just said I didn’t like the taste.”

Evelyn looked at him.

And something cold passed across her face.

“Children shouldn’t question adults.”

Daniel heard it.

So did I.

And we both knew something was wrong.

Because that wasn’t how a grandmother talked.

That was how someone talked when they believed they had control.

Daniel grabbed his phone.

“We’re going to the hospital.”

Evelyn immediately stepped forward.

“No.”

Everyone looked at her.

She froze.

Then she quickly changed her expression.

“I mean
 there’s no need to panic.”

Daniel stared at her.

“My son is sick.”

“He’s probably just scared.”

“Move.”

For the first time in years, Evelyn looked powerless.

But only for a second.

As Daniel carried Ethan toward the car, she leaned close to me.

“You really want to destroy this family?”

I looked at her.

“You did that yourself.”

Her eyes narrowed.

“You have no idea who you’re fighting.”

A chill went through me.

Because I believed her.

Evelyn Carter wasn’t someone who admitted defeat.

She was someone who hid evidence.

Someone who planned.

And as Daniel started the car

I noticed something.

The glass of tea was gone.

Someone had taken it.

And only one person had been standing near that table.

May you like

Grandma Evelyn.
