Chapter 5 - THE PERSON BEHIND THE DOOR

The next morning, Daniel barely slept.

Neither did I.

Every time I closed my eyes, I saw Ethan crying on that patio.

I saw the plate breaking.

I heard those words.

“Garbage cooks garbage.”

But now there was another question.

Who was standing behind that door?

At 7 a.m., Daniel made a decision.

“We’re going back.”

I looked at him.

“Back where?”

“To my mother’s house.”

“Daniel
”

“I need answers.”

I wanted to stop him.

But I knew him.

When it came to Ethan, nothing could hold him back.

When we arrived, Evelyn was already waiting.

She was sitting on the porch drinking coffee.

Calm.

Relaxed.

Like nothing had happened.

“You came back.”

Daniel stepped forward.

“Who was behind the door?”

For the first time, her expression changed.

Only for a second.

But we saw it.

“You don’t know what you’re talking about.”

“We have the footage.”

She smiled.

“Do you?”

Daniel narrowed his eyes.

“What does that mean?”

Evelyn placed her coffee cup down.

“You always think having evidence makes you powerful.”

She stood.

“But evidence only matters if people believe it.”

My hands tightened.

“You poisoned your grandson.”

Her eyes moved toward me.

“No.”

She walked closer.

“I protected him.”

The words shocked us.

“What?”

“You have no idea what’s happening.”

Daniel laughed bitterly.

“You expect us to believe that?”

“Yes.”

She looked directly at him.

“Because you don’t know the truth about your own family.”

Daniel’s face hardened.

“What truth?”

Before she answered, a car pulled into the driveway.

An old man stepped out.

Daniel recognized him immediately.

His face changed.

“Dad?”

I looked at Daniel.

“You never told me your father was alive.”

Evelyn smiled.

“Because some secrets are better buried.”

The man slowly walked toward us.

His name was Richard Carter.

Daniel’s father.

A man everyone believed had disappeared years ago.

He looked at Daniel.

“I need to talk to you.”

Daniel stared.

“About what?”

Richard looked at Evelyn.

Then back at his son.

“About your mother.”

Nobody moved.

Then he said something that changed everything.

“She has been lying to this family for thirty years.”

Evelyn’s calm expression finally cracked.

“Richard, don’t.”

But he continued.

“Daniel, your mother isn’t protecting this family.”

He took a breath.

“She’s destroying it.”

Daniel looked between them.

“What are you talking about?”

Richard reached into his coat.

He pulled out an old envelope.

“I found this hidden in her office.”

He handed it to Daniel.

“Your mother has been hiding this from you your entire life.”

Daniel opened it.

And inside

Was a document with his name on it.

But the date was from before he was born.

His face turned pale.

“What is this?”

Richard looked at him.

May you like

“The truth about who you really are.”
