Chapter 8 - THE BOX THAT HELD THE PAST

Daniel stood at the bottom of the stairs.

His eyes locked on the man holding the box.

“Who are you?”

The man slowly walked down.

He looked older than Daniel.

Tired.

Like someone who had carried a secret for years.

“My name is Marcus.”

Daniel’s jaw tightened.

“I don’t know any Marcus.”

“You should.”

The man placed the box on the table.

“Because your mother does.”

Daniel looked at the box.

“The same one my son saw?”

Marcus nodded.

“He shouldn’t have found it.”

“Why?”

“Because Evelyn knew someone would eventually discover the truth.”

Daniel stepped closer.

“What truth?”

Marcus looked at him.

“The truth about your birth.”

The words hit again.

Daniel hated hearing them.

Because every answer created another question.

“You know who my real parents are?”

Marcus didn’t answer immediately.

That hesitation told Daniel everything.

“You do.”

“Yes.”

“Who?”

Marcus looked down.

“Your father was my brother.”

Daniel froze.

“What?”

“Your real father.”

The room seemed to shrink.

Marcus opened the box.

Inside were old photographs.

Letters.

Documents.

And a small hospital bracelet.

Daniel picked it up.

His hands shook.

The name written on it was his.

The date matched his birthday.

“But why?” Daniel whispered.

Marcus looked toward the stairs.

“Because Evelyn wasn’t supposed to raise you.”

Daniel looked up.

“What happened?”

Marcus took a deep breath.

“Your parents discovered something.”

“What?”

“A financial crime.”

Daniel frowned.

“What does that have to do with me?”

“Everything.”

Marcus opened an old letter.

“Your parents found evidence that someone was stealing money from the Carter family business.”

Daniel stared.

“And?”

“And the person responsible was someone they trusted.”

A horrible thought entered Daniel’s mind.

“Evelyn?”

Marcus didn’t answer.

He didn’t need to.

Daniel stepped back.

“No.”

“She was afraid your parents would expose her.”

“So she took me?”

“She believed she was protecting herself.”

Daniel looked sick.

“For thirty years
”

Marcus nodded.

“She controlled every part of your life.”

Daniel picked up another photograph.

It showed a young couple holding a baby.

Him.

His real parents.

Then something caught his attention.

A note written on the back.

He read it.

And his face changed.

“What does it say?” Marcus asked.

Daniel didn’t answer.

He handed the picture over.

Marcus read the words.

Then his expression became serious.

Because the message wasn’t from his parents.

It was from someone else.

Someone who had known Daniel would find it one day.

The note said:

“If Daniel ever discovers the truth, tell him the second secret is still alive.”

Daniel looked up.

“Second secret?”

Before Marcus could answer

The lights suddenly went out.

A sound came from the back door.

Someone had entered the house.

Marcus whispered:

“She found us.”

Daniel turned.

“Who?”

Marcus looked terrified.

“Evelyn.”

But when Daniel looked toward the doorway

It wasn’t Evelyn standing there.

It was someone holding a weapon.

And they said:

May you like

“Step away from the box.”
