Chapter 13 - THE PLACE WHERE IT ALL BEGAN

The old Carter property sat at the edge of town.

Abandoned for thirty years.

The house was falling apart.

The windows were broken.

The yard was covered with weeds.

But Daniel knew one thing.

This place wasn’t abandoned.

Not anymore.

Someone had been here recently.

The moment the car stopped, Evelyn grabbed Daniel’s arm.

“Wait.”

He looked at her.

“What?”

“You need to understand something.”

Daniel’s eyes were full of anger.

“My son is inside.”

“I know.”

“No, you don’t.”

His voice cracked.

“You don’t know what it feels like to have your child taken from you.”

Evelyn lowered her head.

And for once, she didn’t fight back.

“You’re right.”

A long silence followed.

Then she whispered:

“I failed you.”

Daniel looked at her.

Those words were harder to hear than any excuse.

Because Evelyn Carter never admitted failure.

Not once.

Daniel stepped away.

“Then help me fix it.”

Evelyn nodded.

Together, they walked toward the house.

The front door was unlocked.

Inside, the air smelled old and dusty.

“Robert?”

No answer.

They moved deeper into the building.

Then they heard something.

A small voice.

“Daddy?”

Daniel froze.

“Ethan!”

He ran toward the sound.

But Evelyn grabbed him.

“Wait.”

He stopped.

A wire was stretched across the doorway.

A trap.

Daniel looked at her.

“How did you know?”

“Because Robert always thinks the same way.”

They carefully stepped over it.

Inside the room, Ethan was sitting on a chair.

His hands were tied loosely.

But he was safe.

“Daddy!”

Daniel rushed forward.

He hugged him tightly.

“I’m here.”

Ethan started crying.

“I knew you would come.”

Daniel held him.

“I’m never leaving you.”

Then a voice came from behind.

“Beautiful moment.”

Daniel turned.

Robert stood in the doorway.

His face was calm.

Too calm.

“You really thought you could walk in here and take him?”

Daniel stood in front of Ethan.

“You’re done.”

Robert smiled.

“Am I?”

He looked at Evelyn.

“You told him everything?”

Evelyn stepped forward.

“Yes.”

Robert laughed.

“After all these years, you finally grew a conscience.”

Daniel stared at him.

“What do you want?”

Robert looked around the old house.

“Justice.”

Daniel almost laughed.

“You kidnapped a child and you’re talking about justice?”

Robert’s expression changed.

“You have no idea what your family did.”

“My family?”

“Yes.”

He pointed at Evelyn.

“She knows.”

Daniel looked at her.

“What is he talking about?”

Evelyn closed her eyes.

“I made a mistake.”

Robert smiled.

“There it is.”

Daniel’s heart sank.

“What mistake?”

Evelyn looked at him.

“The night your parents died
”

She stopped.

Daniel waited.

“What happened?”

Her voice shook.

“I was there.”

The room went silent.

Daniel stepped back.

“You were there?”

Evelyn nodded.

“And I didn’t tell you everything.”

Robert smiled.

“Now you’re finally hearing the truth.”

Daniel looked at his mother.

“Tell me.”

Evelyn’s eyes filled with tears.

“I followed your parents that night.”

“Why?”

“Because I wanted to stop them from exposing Robert.”

Daniel froze.

The words felt like a punch.

“You knew?”

“Yes.”

“Then why didn’t you save them?”

Evelyn broke down.

“Because I was too late.”

Nobody spoke.

Then Robert suddenly moved.

He grabbed Ethan.

Daniel reacted instantly.

“Don’t touch him!”

Robert held up a small device.

A remote.

“You want the rest of the truth?”

He smiled.

“Then you’re going to listen.”

Because Robert wasn’t finished.

He had one final secret.

May you like

And it was the secret even Evelyn had hidden.
