Chapter 10 - THE NIGHT EVERYTHING CHANGED

Nobody spoke.

The house felt frozen in time.

Daniel stood between the two people who had shaped his entire life.

One was the woman who raised him.

The other was the man who claimed she had destroyed his family.

And both were accusing each other.

“Tell me what happened,” Daniel said.

His voice was shaking.

Not because he was scared.

Because he was tired.

“Tired of secrets.”

Evelyn looked at him.

For the first time, she didn’t look like a powerful woman who controlled everything.

She looked like a mother who had been carrying a painful truth for too long.

“Your parents discovered something they were never supposed to find.”

Daniel clenched his fists.

“The family business.”

She nodded.

“Robert was moving money. Millions of dollars.”

Robert immediately laughed.

“Don’t listen to her.”

Evelyn ignored him.

“Your father confronted him.”

“And then?”

Her eyes filled with tears.

“Your parents were going to report him.”

Daniel looked at Robert.

“And you stopped them?”

Robert’s face hardened.

“You have no idea what you’re talking about.”

Evelyn continued.

“That night, Robert followed them.”

Daniel felt his stomach drop.

“What happened?”

She looked down.

“There was a crash.”

Silence.

“My parents died in a car accident,” Daniel whispered.

Evelyn nodded.

“But it wasn’t an accident.”

Daniel stopped breathing.

Robert suddenly stepped forward.

“Enough.”

His voice changed.

The friendly uncle disappeared.

The dangerous man appeared.

“You have no proof.”

Evelyn looked at him.

“I kept proof.”

Robert’s eyes narrowed.

“Where?”

She smiled slightly.

“Somewhere you could never find.”

Daniel looked confused.

“What proof?”

Evelyn turned toward him.

“The reason Ethan found the box.”

Daniel remembered.

The box.

The picture.

The secret.

“What was inside?”

Before Evelyn could answer, Robert suddenly moved.

Fast.

He grabbed the box from the table.

Daniel reacted immediately.

“Hey!”

Robert pushed past him and ran toward the back door.

Daniel chased him.

The two men crashed through the kitchen.

Robert was older, but desperation made him strong.

“You don’t understand what you’re protecting!”

Daniel grabbed his jacket.

“You threatened my son!”

Robert turned.

“You think I wanted to hurt him?”

Daniel froze.

“What?”

Robert pulled free.

“I was trying to scare Evelyn.”

“Why?”

“Because she knows where the evidence is.”

Then Robert ran.

Daniel followed him outside.

But he was too late.

A car started in the driveway.

Robert looked back through the window.

And smiled.

Because he knew something Daniel didn’t.

The box was empty.

The real evidence was still hidden.

Daniel walked back inside.

Evelyn was standing there.

“Where is it?”

She looked at him.

“What?”

“The real evidence.”

Her expression changed.

And Daniel realized something.

She knew exactly where it was.

“Mom
”

Evelyn whispered:

“I buried it thirty years ago.”

Daniel stared.

“Where?”

She looked toward the backyard.

Toward the same patio where Ethan had dropped the plate.

Then she said:

May you like

“Under the stone where everything started.”
