Chapter 7 - THE WARNING THAT CHANGED EVERYTHING

Daniel stared at the message on his phone.

The picture of Ethan sleeping in the hospital bed.

The words underneath burned into his mind.

STOP DIGGING, OR LOSE HIM.

For a few seconds, nobody moved.

Then Daniel threw the phone onto the table.

“No.”

His voice was low.

Almost calm.

And that scared me more than yelling.

“Daniel
”

He looked at me.

“They threatened our son.”

“I know.”

“No, you don’t.”

His eyes filled with anger.

“They don’t understand who they’re dealing with.”

I grabbed his arm.

“Don’t do anything reckless.”

He looked away.

Because we both knew he was thinking the same thing.

Finding whoever sent that message.

Making them pay.

A few minutes later, the hospital called.

Ethan was awake.

We rushed back.

When we entered his room, our son looked smaller than ever.

He was sitting in bed holding a stuffed animal.

The moment he saw Daniel, his eyes filled with tears.

“Daddy.”

Daniel immediately hugged him.

“I’m here, buddy.”

Ethan held him tightly.

“Did I do something wrong?”

That question broke me.

I walked closer.

“No, sweetheart. Why would you think that?”

He looked down.

“Because Grandma was mad.”

Daniel’s face changed.

“What did Grandma say?”

Ethan hesitated.

Then whispered:

“She said I ruined everything.”

The room became silent.

“What else?” Daniel asked gently.

Ethan looked scared.

“She asked me if I told anyone about the box.”

Daniel and I looked at each other.

“The box?” I asked.

Ethan nodded.

“Grandma had a box in the pantry.”

My heart started beating faster.

“What kind of box?”

“I don’t know.”

He looked at Daniel.

“But she said nobody was supposed to find it.”

Daniel sat beside him.

“Did you see what was inside?”

Ethan thought for a moment.

Then nodded.

“A picture.”

“What picture?”

He swallowed.

“Of you.”

Daniel froze.

“Me?”

“And a woman.”

I felt a chill.

“What woman?”

Ethan closed his eyes.

“I don’t know.”

Then he said something that changed everything.

“But Grandma cried when she looked at it.”

Daniel stood up slowly.

Because his mother had always told him one thing.

She never cried.

Not once.

Not even when his father left.

Not even when life became difficult.

But now Ethan had seen something nobody else had.

A crack in Evelyn Carter’s armor.

Later that night, Daniel returned to his mother’s house alone.

I wanted to go with him.

But he refused.

“I need to do this.”

“Daniel, be careful.”

He looked at me.

“I spent my whole life believing my mother protected me.”

He paused.

“Now I don’t know if she saved me
”

His voice dropped.

“Or trapped me.”

When he arrived, the front door was unlocked.

That was strange.

Evelyn never left anything unlocked.

“Mom?”

No answer.

He walked inside.

The house was dark.

Too dark.

Then he heard something.

A drawer closing upstairs.

Someone was inside.

Daniel slowly walked toward the stairs.

“Who’s there?”

Silence.

Then a voice answered.

A voice he didn’t expect.

“You shouldn’t have come here.”

Daniel stopped.

Because standing at the top of the stairs

Was the person from the camera footage.

The person who had been hiding behind the door.

May you like

And he was holding the same box Ethan had seen.
