Chapter 9 - THE NIGHT CLAIRE WESTWOOD DIED

Adrian couldn’t move.
“Papers?”
Rachel nodded slowly.
“Mrs. Westwood discovered something about Madison and Caleb.”
Caleb immediately stepped forward.
“Stop.”
Adrian turned.
“No.”
His voice was dangerous.
“Let her speak.”
Rachel continued.
“Claire found evidence they were working together.”
Adrian looked at Caleb.
His own brother.
The person who sat beside him during Claire’s funeral.
The person who told him to move on.
“You knew.”
Caleb looked broken.
“I knew something was wrong.”
“Something?”
Adrian’s voice rose.
“My wife died.”
Caleb lowered his eyes.
“I didn’t know they would kill her.”
The room froze.
Adrian stared.
“Who is they?”
Caleb said nothing.
Madison suddenly shouted.
“Caleb!”
Everyone turned.
Because it was the first time she sounded afraid of him.
Not Adrian.
Him.
Adrian noticed everything.
The fear.
The panic.
The betrayal.
Madison and Caleb were not partners anymore.
They were two people trying to survive.
Adrian walked closer.
“Tell me everything.”
Caleb shook his head.
“You don’t understand.”
“Then explain.”
Caleb looked toward the security cameras.
Then whispered:
“We were not the only ones involved.”
Adrian frowned.
“What does that mean?”
Caleb looked at Margaret.
Their mother.
The woman who had spent years telling Adrian to forget Claire.
And Margaret looked away.
Adrian felt something inside him break.
His entire family.
Everyone he trusted.
All connected.
He grabbed the folder.
“What else did Claire find?”
Rachel answered softly.
“A recording.”
Adrian turned.
“A recording of what?”
Rachel looked at Madison.
“The night your wife died.”
Madison’s face became completely empty.

Because she knew.
She knew exactly what was on it.
