Chapter 2 - THE SECRET BEHIND THE DRESSES

The upstairs hallway looked exactly the same.
That was the worst part.
The same paintings.
The same wooden floor.
The same photographs of a life Adrian thought he had lost forever.
Rachel followed behind him with Emma.
Natalie Westwood, Claire’s younger sister, walked beside them.
Nobody spoke.
Until Madison’s voice echoed from behind.
“Adrian, please.”
He stopped.
Slowly turned.
“What?”
Madison looked nervous.
“You’re letting grief control you.”
Natalie immediately stepped forward.
“No.”
Everyone looked at her.
Natalie stared at Madison.
“He’s finally listening.”
Madison’s expression hardened.
“You have always hated me.”
Natalie laughed bitterly.
“No.”
She stepped closer.
“I hated how quickly you replaced my sister.”
The hallway became silent.
Adrian hated hearing them fight.
But this time…
He didn’t stop them.
Because something inside him was starting to wake up.
A feeling he buried for three years.
Doubt.
Claire’s bedroom door stood at the end of the hallway.
Locked.
Adrian pulled the key from his pocket.
He never removed it.
Never changed it.
Never touched it.
The lock turned.
The door opened.
A familiar scent filled the hallway.
Claire’s perfume.
Adrian closed his eyes.
For one second…
He was back three years earlier.
Claire laughing.
Claire smiling.
Claire telling him everything would be okay.
Then the memory disappeared.
Because someone had been inside.
He saw it immediately.
The room was clean.
Too clean.
Claire’s belongings had been moved.
Adrian walked toward the closet.
Emma pointed.
“There.”
Nobody moved.
Adrian opened the closet doors.
Claire’s dresses hung perfectly.
Her favorite black dress.
Her white evening gown.
The green dress she wore on their anniversary.
Madison stood behind him.
Silent.
Adrian pushed the dresses aside.
His fingers touched wood.
A hidden cedar panel.
Natalie gasped.
“She was right.”
Adrian stared at the panel.
Nobody had touched it in years.
Except someone had.
The wood had fresh scratches.
Someone recently opened it.
Adrian slowly unlocked the hidden compartment.
Inside was a small red Cartier box.
His hands trembled.
Because that box should not exist.
The police said it disappeared in the crash.
The wedding ring inside was gone forever.
But here it was.
Waiting.
Adrian opened it.
Inside was not Claire’s ring.
It was a small black flash drive.
And a handwritten note.
Adrian picked up the note.
Only four words were written.
“Do not trust Madison.”
Nobody spoke.
Madison stepped backward.
And Adrian finally understood.
