Chapter 1 - THE CLOSET THAT SHOULD HAVE STAYED LOCKED

The first thing Adrian Westwood noticed was not the fear on Madison Cole’s face.
It was the silence.
Three hundred people had been talking moments earlier.
Executives.
Politicians.
Chicago’s wealthiest families.
Everyone had gathered inside the Westwood estate to celebrate Adrian’s engagement.
But now…
Nobody dared to whisper.
Because a four-year-old girl had just accused the woman standing beside him of hiding something inside his dead wife’s closet.
Adrian held the engagement ring box tightly.
The diamond inside reflected the chandelier lights.
Six weeks from now, Madison was supposed to become his wife.
The woman who helped him survive the darkest years of his life.
The woman everyone told him he needed.
But the little girl standing in front of him had just said something impossible.
“Check your closet, sir.”
Adrian looked at her carefully.
“What did you say?”
The little girl hugged her stuffed rabbit.
“The closet that belonged to Mrs. Westwood.”
A cold feeling moved through Adrian’s body.
Claire.
Even after three years…
That name still hurt.
Madison noticed the change in his expression.
She stepped closer.
“Adrian, don’t do this.”
He looked at her.
“Do what?”
“Let a child ruin our engagement party.”
The words sounded calm.
But Adrian noticed something else.
Madison was not looking at the child.
She was looking at Rachel.
The maid.
The little girl’s mother.
Rachel Bennett lowered her eyes.
She looked terrified.
Adrian walked toward her.
“What is your daughter’s name?”
Rachel hesitated.
“Emma.”
“Emma.”
Adrian lowered himself until he was eye level with the child.
“Why did you tell me to check Claire’s closet?”
Emma looked toward Madison.
Then back at Adrian.
“Because she went inside.”
The room exploded with whispers.
Madison immediately shook her head.
“That is not true.”
Emma frowned.
“You were wearing blue.”
Adrian looked at Madison’s dress.
Midnight blue silk.
The same color Emma described.
“When?” Adrian asked.
Emma squeezed her rabbit.
“At night.”
Rachel quickly stepped forward.
“Emma doesn’t understand what she’s saying.”
But Adrian stopped her.
“No.”
His voice was quiet.
“Let her finish.”
Emma looked at Madison.
“You took off your shoes.”
Madison’s face changed.
Only for a second.
But Adrian saw it.
“Why?” he asked.
Madison forced a smile.
“Because this is ridiculous.”
Emma shook her head.
“Because the shoes made noise.”
Adrian’s heart started beating faster.
Because he knew that sound.
The clicking of heels against the old wooden hallway upstairs.
A hallway leading to Claire’s locked bedroom.
A room nobody entered.
Not even him.
Three years earlier, Claire Westwood died on a rainy road outside Lake Forest.
Her Mercedes went through a guardrail.
The vehicle crashed into a ravine.
The investigation concluded it was an accident.
Everyone accepted it.
Everyone except Adrian.
Because Claire hated driving during storms.
She checked everything twice.
She was careful.
Almost painfully careful.
And before the crash…
She called him.
“Adrian, I need to tell you something about Madison.”
He remembered those words every single night.
He should have asked more questions.
He should have come home earlier.
But he didn’t.
And Claire died before he could hear the truth.
Now that truth was standing in front of him.
Inside a locked room.
Hidden behind a closet door.
Adrian stood.
“Take me upstairs.”
Madison grabbed his arm.
“No.”
Everyone looked at her.
She immediately softened her voice.
“I mean… Adrian, this is unnecessary.”
He slowly removed her hand.
“Why are you afraid of a closet?”
Madison froze.
Nobody answered.
Adrian turned toward the staircase.

And for the first time in three years…
He walked toward Claire’s room.
