Chapter 12 - THE ROOM ELEANOR SEALED FOR FIFTEEN YEARS

The Whitmore family vault was located beneath the mansion.

A place almost nobody knew existed.

The walls were covered with old paintings.

Family portraits.

Generations of Whitmores who built their fortune.

But one door stood at the end of the hallway.

A steel door.

Without a name.

Without a label.

The officer looked at Eleanor.

“What is behind that door?”

Eleanor said nothing.

Sofia held the key.

Her small fingers touched the lock.

Clara watched carefully.

“Your mother told me about this place.”

Sofia looked at her.

“She did?”

Clara nodded.

“She said this room held the truth.”

The key turned.

The lock opened.

Everyone waited.

The door slowly moved.

Inside was a small room.

Dust covered everything.

Old boxes filled the shelves.

But in the center sat one wooden box.

Waiting.

Sofia walked toward it.

Eleanor suddenly moved forward.

“Stop.”

The officer immediately stepped between them.

“Ma’am.”

Eleanor stopped.

Everyone saw it.

She was afraid.

Sofia reached the box.

There was no lock.

Only a name written on the top.

Her mother’s name.

Sofia touched the letters.

“She was here.”

Clara looked emotional.

“She wanted you to find it.”

Sofia opened the box.

Inside were documents.

A diary.

Photographs.

And one sealed envelope.

The envelope had only one sentence.

FOR SOFIA, WHEN SHE IS OLD ENOUGH TO KNOW THE TRUTH.

The room became silent.

Sofia looked at Clara.

“Should I open it?”

Clara nodded.

But before Sofia could open the envelope…

Eleanor spoke.

“You don’t want to read that.”

Everyone looked at her.

Sofia slowly turned.

“Why?”

Eleanor stared at the envelope.

Because she knew.

The truth was inside.

“The truth can destroy people.”

Sofia held the envelope tighter.

“My mom already knew that.”

A pause.

“She still wanted me to have it.”

Sofia opened the envelope.

Inside was a photograph.

A photograph that made everyone freeze.

Because it showed Sofia’s mother…

Holding a newborn baby.

May you like

And standing beside her was someone nobody expected.

The bride’s father.
