Chapter 7 - THE FATHER WHO WAS SUPPOSED TO BE DEAD

Ethan forgot how to breathe.
The man standing in front of him couldnât be real.
Not after three years.
Not after the funeral.
Not after watching a coffin disappear into the ground.
His father was dead.
Everyone said so.
Everyone except the man standing in the basement.
Noah hid behind Ethan.
âEthanâŠâ
His little voice trembled.
âWho is that?â
Ethan couldnât answer.
Because he didnât know.
The man looked older.
Different.
There were scars across his face.
His hair was gray.
But those eyesâŠ
Ethan knew those eyes.
The same eyes that used to look at him across the dinner table.
The same eyes that once carried him on his shoulders.
âDad?â
The word came out before Ethan could stop it.
The manâs expression changed.
Pain.
Regret.
Guilt.
All at once.
âEthanâŠâ
His voice cracked.
âIâm sorry.â
Those two words destroyed something inside him.
Ethan stepped forward.
Then stopped.
âYouâre sorry?â
His voice shook.
âYouâre standing here after three years and all you can say is sorry?â
Laura moved between them.
âEthan, please.â
He looked at his mother.
âNo.â
The anger he had buried for years finally exploded.
âNo, Mom.â
He pointed at the man.
âYou both disappeared.â
His eyes filled with tears.
âI was fourteen when I started paying bills.â
His voice grew louder.
âI learned how to cook because nobody else was there.â
âI learned how to comfort Noah because nobody else did.â
He looked at his father.
âAnd you were alive?â
The silence was unbearable.
His father lowered his head.
âI had no choice.â
Ethan laughed bitterly.
âEveryone always says that.â
Richard watched from the doorway.
A smile slowly appeared on his face.
âBeautiful reunion, isnât it?â
Everyone turned.
Richard stepped closer.
âBut now the truth can finally come out.â
Lauraâs face hardened.
âYou donât get to tell the truth.â
Richard ignored her.
âYour father wasnât killed.â
Ethan looked at him.
âWhat?â
Richard smiled.
âHe disappeared because he was running.â
His father looked furious.
âDonât listen to him.â
Richard continued.
âYour father found out what Noah really was.â
Ethan immediately moved closer to Noah.
âEnough.â
Richard pointed at the boy.
âThat child is the reason your entire family was destroyed.â
Noah started crying.
âI didnât do anything.â
Ethan pulled him close.
âYou hear me?â
He looked down at his brother.
âYou did nothing wrong.â
Richard laughed.
âThatâs exactly what Laura told you.â
The mysterious man stepped forward.
âRichard, this ends now.â
Richard looked at him.
âYou still think youâre the hero?â
He smiled.
âYou abandoned your family.â
The words hit harder than Ethan expected.
Because deep downâŠ
he feared they were true.
Suddenly, police sirens echoed outside.
Richardâs expression changed.
For the first timeâŠ
he looked worried.
Claire whispered:
âSomeone called them.â
Richard backed away.
âThis isnât over.â
He looked directly at Noah.
âSoon, everyone will know why you were never supposed to exist.â
Then he escaped through the back entrance.
Ethan stood frozen.
His family was alive.
But the truth was darker than he ever imagined.
Then his father turned to him.
And said:
May you like
âEthanâŠâ
âWe need to talk about why Noah was born.â
