Chapter 13 - THE RECORDING THAT ENDED THE LIES

The screen flickered.

Everyone in the room stopped moving.

Victoria’s face disappeared.

Then another video appeared.

A younger Victoria.

A younger Richard.

And a conversation that had been hidden for years.

Ethan stared.

“No
”

His mother covered her mouth.

Because she recognized the room.

The date.

The people.

Everything.

The recording began.

Victoria’s voice filled the building.

“Once Laura is gone, everything belongs to us.”

Richard smiled.

“And the children?”

Victoria shrugged.

“Ethan is old enough to understand loss.”

She paused.

“And Noah
”

The room became cold.

“What about Noah?”

Victoria looked at Richard.

“He’s the key.”

Ethan’s hands tightened.

The recording continued.

“We make people believe he’s dangerous. We make them believe he’s the reason everything happened.”

Richard nodded.

“And Laura?”

Victoria smiled.

“She will disappear.”

The video stopped.

Nobody spoke.

The truth was finally there.

Not a rumor.

Not an accusation.

Proof.

Ethan looked at his mother.

She was crying silently.

All those years.

All those nights.

All that pain.

Because of them.

His father stepped toward the camera.

“Victoria.”

Her voice suddenly came through the speakers.

“You were never supposed to find that.”

Ethan looked up.

“You’re done.”

Victoria laughed.

“No.”

The sound was cold.

“You still don’t understand.”

The screen changed.

Another file appeared.

A medical report.

Noah’s name was written at the top.

Ethan froze.

“What is that?”

Victoria smiled.

“The reason everyone will come after him.”

Laura moved closer.

“Don’t.”

Victoria ignored her.

“Your brother isn’t just valuable.”

She looked directly at Ethan.

“He’s unique.”

Noah stepped back.

“I don’t want to be unique.”

Ethan immediately moved in front of him.

“You’re not a thing.”

Victoria smiled.

“That’s exactly what makes you dangerous, Ethan.”

The police arrived outside.

Sirens filled the building.

Victoria realized she had lost control.

But before she disappeared from the screen, she whispered:

“Ask your mother one final question.”

Ethan stared.

“What question?”

Victoria smiled.

“Ask her why she chose Noah over you.”

The screen went black.

The words stayed.

Why she chose Noah over you.

Ethan turned slowly.

His heart hurt.

“Mom?”

Laura’s face changed.

Because there was a truth she had never told him.

A truth she had been hiding.

“I didn’t choose Noah over you.”

She started crying.

“I chose you both.”

“Then why did everyone protect him?”

The silence answered before she did.

Laura walked toward him.

“Because you were always strong.”

Ethan looked away.

“I was a kid.”

“I know.”

Her voice broke.

“And that was my biggest mistake.”

She touched his face.

“I thought because you could survive
”

“You didn’t need saving.”

Ethan finally broke.

Years of anger.

Years of loneliness.

Years of pretending he was okay.

All came out.

“I needed you.”

Laura hugged him.

“I know.”

For the first time in ten years

mother and son held each other.

But outside the building

someone was watching.

Someone who had not been caught.

Someone who had one last secret.

And when Ethan saw the person standing near the police cars

May you like

his blood went cold.

Because it was someone he trusted.
