Chapter 3 - THE FILE THAT COULD DESTROY EVERYTHING

Ethan felt like the floor had disappeared beneath him.

His father’s death.

His mother’s disappearance.

The years of struggle.

The nights he spent holding Noah while they cried together.

All of it suddenly connected to one terrifying possibility.

Someone had lied.

For years.

The judge stared at Claire.

“Explain yourself.”

Claire took a shaky breath.

“Ethan’s mother, Laura Miller, was investigating financial crimes inside her husband’s company.”

Richard immediately stepped forward.

“That is ridiculous.”

The judge raised her hand.

“Sit down.”

Richard slowly returned to his seat.

But his eyes stayed locked on Ethan.

Like a warning.

Claire continued.

“Laura found evidence that someone had been stealing money.”

“Millions of dollars.”

Ethan looked at Richard.

The man who had comforted him after his father died.

The man who brought groceries to their house.

The man who told him everything would be okay.

“You knew?”

Richard didn’t answer.

Ethan’s voice shook.

“You knew my mom was alive?”

Richard finally looked at him.

“I knew she was dangerous.”

The courtroom gasped.

Ethan felt sick.

“What does that mean?”

Richard leaned back.

“It means your mother cared more about exposing the truth than protecting her own family.”

Claire stood up.

“Don’t listen to him.”

Richard laughed.

“You still believe her?”

He pointed at Ethan.

“She abandoned you.”

“No!”

The scream came from Noah.

Everyone turned.

The little boy was crying.

“She didn’t leave us.”

His voice trembled.

“Mommy loved us.”

Ethan immediately knelt down.

“Hey
”

Noah grabbed his face.

“Don’t believe him, Ethan.”

Ethan closed his eyes.

Because Noah was only seven.

But somehow

he was the one keeping Ethan strong.

The judge looked at the documents Claire had brought.

“Is there proof?”

Claire nodded.

“Yes.”

She opened the envelope.

Inside was a small flash drive.

“This contains everything Laura collected.”

The prosecutor reached for it.

But before anyone could take it

Richard moved.

Fast.

Too fast.

He grabbed his briefcase and stood.

The courtroom erupted.

“Security!”

Richard backed toward the door.

“You have no idea what you’re doing.”

Ethan stepped forward.

“You ruined our lives.”

Richard looked at him.

“No.”

His voice became cold.

“I protected myself.”

The words hung in the air.

Everyone heard them.

Including the judge.

Richard realized his mistake.

His face changed.

But it was too late.

The courtroom doors locked.

Security surrounded him.

Ethan stood frozen.

For the first time in years

he felt like someone was finally fighting for him.

Then Claire looked at the flash drive.

Her expression suddenly changed.

“What?”

The judge noticed.

“What is it?”

Claire’s hands started shaking.

“This isn’t the only file.”

Ethan looked at her.

“What do you mean?”

Claire swallowed.

“Your mother left another message.”

“For who?”

Claire looked at Noah.

The little boy.

Then she whispered:

“For the son she thought she would never see again.”

The courtroom went silent.

Ethan looked at Noah.

“Noah?”

Claire nodded slowly.

“The message wasn’t for you.”

A tear rolled down Ethan’s face.

“Then who was it for?”

Claire opened the file.

The screen turned on.

And a woman’s voice filled the courtroom.

A voice Ethan hadn’t heard in ten years.

“Ethan
 if you’re watching this
”

A sob escaped him.

The voice continued.

“I need you to protect your little brother.”

Ethan froze.

May you like

Then came the sentence that changed everything.

“Because Noah is the reason someone tried to destroy our family.”
