Chapter 6 - THE TRUTH THAT BROKE THEIR FAMILY

The farmhouse went dark.

Completely dark.

Ethan held Noah close.

Laura stood beside them.

And for the first time in ten years

mother and son were together.

But there was no time for a reunion.

Only survival.

The front door shook.

Someone was trying to break in.

Claire whispered:

“We need to move.”

Laura nodded.

“There’s a hidden exit in the basement.”

Ethan looked at her.

“You knew this could happen?”

Laura looked away.

“I always knew they would come.”

That answer hurt.

“You knew?”

Ethan’s voice rose.

“You knew someone was after us?”

Laura closed her eyes.

“Yes.”

“Then why didn’t you come back?”

The question broke her.

“Because every time I tried
”

She swallowed.

“They threatened you.”

Ethan became silent.

“They showed me pictures of you walking home from school.”

Noah hugged Ethan tighter.

“They were watching us?”

Laura nodded.

“For years.”

The sound of glass breaking interrupted them.

Someone had entered the house.

Claire grabbed a flashlight.

“Basement. Now.”

They ran.

The old wooden stairs creaked beneath their feet.

Above them, footsteps moved through the house.

Slow.

Calm.

Like whoever was coming knew exactly where they were.

At the bottom of the basement, Laura pushed against an old shelf.

A hidden door opened.

Ethan stared.

“How long has this been here?”

“Since before you were born.”

They entered the small tunnel.

Then suddenly

a voice echoed from the basement entrance.

“Laura.”

Everyone stopped.

Richard.

Standing there.

But he wasn’t alone.

A second person stepped behind him.

Ethan couldn’t see the face.

Only the shadow.

Richard smiled.

“You really thought running away would protect them?”

Laura stepped in front of her children.

“You will never touch them again.”

Richard laughed.

“You still don’t understand.”

He looked at Noah.

“The boy was the problem from the beginning.”

Ethan’s fists tightened.

“Stop talking about him.”

Richard looked at Ethan.

“You think you’re his brother.”

A pause.

“But you don’t know the truth.”

Noah started shaking.

Ethan pulled him closer.

“He’s my brother.”

Richard smiled.

“That’s what your mother wanted you to believe.”

Laura shouted:

“Don’t listen to him!”

Richard continued.

“Noah was created from an experiment your father funded.”

The words made no sense.

Ethan stared.

“What?”

Richard stepped closer.

“Your father discovered a genetic secret.”

Claire looked horrified.

“Richard
”

He ignored her.

“And Noah was proof.”

Ethan looked at Laura.

“Is that true?”

Laura’s eyes filled with tears.

She didn’t answer.

That silence hurt more than any words.

“No
”

Ethan whispered.

“No, Mom.”

Laura reached toward him.

“Ethan, listen to me.”

But before she could explain

a gunshot exploded.

Everyone screamed.

The bullet hit the wall beside Ethan.

Richard shouted:

“Run!”

Not to Ethan.

To the person behind him.

The mysterious figure moved forward.

And when the light finally revealed the face

Ethan felt his entire world collapse.

Because the person standing there

May you like

was the man he had buried three years ago.

His father.
