Chapter 12 - THE CHOICE THAT ALMOST BROKE HIM

The building became a prison.

Metal doors slammed shut.

Emergency lights flashed.

Noah grabbed Ethan’s hand.

“I’m scared.”

Ethan looked down.

He wanted to say everything was okay.

Like he always did.

But this time

he didn’t know if it was true.

“I’m here.”

That was all he could promise.

His father searched the room.

“There has to be another exit.”

Claire checked the control panel.

“It’s locked remotely.”

Laura looked at the countdown.

“Victoria wants something.”

Ethan turned.

“What?”

Laura looked at him.

“You.”

The words hit him.

“No.”

His father immediately stepped forward.

“She will not take my son.”

Laura shook her head.

“She doesn’t want Ethan physically.”

She looked at the screens.

“She wants him to choose.”

Ethan stared.

“Choose what?”

A monitor turned on.

Victoria appeared again.

“I knew you would figure it out.”

Ethan stepped toward the screen.

“Let them go.”

Victoria smiled.

“You sound just like your father.”

“What do you want?”

She tilted her head.

“I want to know if you’re really different.”

Ethan’s jaw tightened.

“Different from who?”

“Everyone.”

The screen split.

On one side was Noah.

On the other side was Ethan’s father.

A timer appeared.

05:00

Ethan’s heart dropped.

Victoria spoke calmly.

“You can save one.”

“No.”

His voice was immediate.

“I’m not choosing.”

Victoria smiled.

“That’s why I picked you.”

The timer continued.

04:59

“You always protect everyone.”

She leaned closer.

“But nobody can save everyone.”

Noah started crying.

“Ethan
”

Ethan turned.

His little brother looked terrified.

“Don’t choose me.”

The words broke him.

“What?”

Noah wiped his tears.

“You always choose me.”

A pause.

“Now choose yourself.”

Ethan shook his head.

“No.”

His father grabbed his shoulder.

“Listen to me.”

Ethan looked at him.

His father’s eyes were full of regret.

“For years, you carried a responsibility that was never yours.”

The timer continued.

03:30

“You were a child.”

Ethan’s eyes filled.

“I had to.”

“I know.”

His father squeezed his shoulder.

“And I’m sorry.”

For the first time

Ethan heard his father say the words he needed years ago.

Not excuses.

Not explanations.

Just sorry.

Then Ethan noticed something.

The countdown.

The cameras.

The control system.

Something didn’t make sense.

Victoria wanted him to panic.

But panic made people predictable.

And Ethan had spent his whole life surviving.

He looked around the room.

Then he smiled.

A small smile.

Everyone noticed.

“What?”

Claire asked.

Ethan looked at the camera.

“She thinks she knows me.”

The timer reached:

02:00

His father frowned.

“What are you doing?”

Ethan walked toward the control panel.

“I’m not choosing.”

Victoria’s voice came through the speakers.

“You don’t have a choice.”

Ethan looked directly at the camera.

“You’re wrong.”

He opened the panel.

Inside were wires.

Security controls.

And one small connection.

His eyes narrowed.

Because he recognized it.

The same system his mother had taught him about years ago.

Victoria had made one mistake.

She underestimated the boy who spent his entire childhood fixing problems adults created.

The timer reached:

00:30

Ethan pulled one wire.

The lights went out.

The locks opened.

Everyone froze.

Then the screen turned back on.

Victoria was no longer smiling.

For the first time

she looked afraid.

Because Ethan had found something she never expected.

A hidden recording.

A recording proving everything.

May you like

And the voice on it

was Victoria’s.
