Chapter 14 - THE LAST BETRAYAL

The person standing outside the building looked familiar.
Too familiar.
Ethan stepped closer.
âClaire?â
Everyone turned.
Claire froze.
The woman who had helped them find the truth.
The woman who brought the letter.
The woman who said she wanted to protect them.
She looked terrified.
âEthanâŠâ
His expression changed.
âWhy are you here?â
Claire looked at Laura.
Then at the ground.
âI can explain.â
His father immediately stepped forward.
âExplain what?â
Police officers moved closer.
Ethan stared at her.
âTell me you didnât know.â
Claireâs eyes filled with tears.
âI knew some things.â
The words hurt.
âHow much?â
Silence.
Then she whispered:
âMore than I told you.â
Noah grabbed Ethanâs hand.
Again.
The same way he had in the courtroom.
The same way he always did when the world felt unsafe.
Ethan looked at Claire.
âWhy?â
She cried.
âBecause I was scared.â
âOf what?â
âOf them.â
She looked toward the building.
âVictoria threatened my family.â
Ethanâs anger softened slightly.
But the pain remained.
âYou let us suffer.â
Claire lowered her head.
âYes.â
The honesty hurt more than a lie.
âI thought I was protecting you.â
Ethan shook his head.
âEveryone says that.â
The words silenced her.
Because they were true.
Everyone had used the same excuse.
Protecting him.
Protecting Noah.
Protecting the family.
But nobody asked what Ethan needed.
A detective approached.
âThereâs something else.â
Everyone turned.
The detective held a folder.
âWe found another file from Victoria.â
Laura looked worried.
âWhat file?â
The detective opened it.
âItâs about Ethan.â
Again.
Ethanâs name.
Always Ethan.
The detective continued.
âVictoria believed Ethan was the biggest threat.â
Ethan frowned.
âWhy?â
The detective looked at the papers.
âBecause Ethan was never supposed to survive.â
Everyone went silent.
âWhat?â
The detective continued.
âThe research showed that children exposed to certain conditions would either failâŠâ
âOr develop unusual abilities.â
Ethan shook his head.
âI donât have abilities.â
The detective looked at him.
âThatâs not what she meant.â
He handed Ethan the file.
Inside was one sentence.
Subject Ethan Miller demonstrated extreme emotional resilience and protective instinct beyond expected levels.
Ethan stared.
âThatâs it?â
The detective nodded.
âShe believed your greatest strength was something she couldnât control.â
âWhat?â
The detective looked at Noah.
âLove.â
The word hit differently.
For years, everyone saw Ethanâs responsibility as a weakness.
His kindness.
His loyalty.
His refusal to abandon Noah.
But it had been the thing that kept him alive.
The thing that made him impossible to break.
Then Ethanâs phone rang.
Everyone froze.
Unknown number.
He answered.
A familiar voice spoke.
Not Victoria.
Not Richard.
Someone else.
Someone who had been missing from the beginning.
âEthanâŠâ
His face changed.
Because he knew that voice.
âDad?â
His father stepped closer.
âThatâs impossible.â
The voice continued.
âI need you to listen carefully.â
Ethan held the phone tighter.
âWho is this?â
The voice whispered:
âThe man you think is your fatherâŠâ
A pause.
âHe isnât.â
Everyone froze.
Ethan looked at the man standing beside him.
His father.
The voice continued:
âHe stole your fatherâs identity.â
The world stopped.
May you like
And then came the final sentence.
âYour real father is still alive.â
