Chapter 10 - THE NIGHT EVERYTHING CHANGED

Ethan stared at his mother.

For years, he thought he knew his entire life.

He thought he knew every painful memory.

Every missing piece.

Every reason his family fell apart.

But now

he realized he had only known the version people wanted him to know.

“Who held me first?”

His voice was barely a whisper.

Laura looked down.

Tears fell onto her hands.

“I was afraid you would hate me.”

Ethan felt his chest tighten.

“Mom
”

She looked at him.

“When you were born, you weren’t supposed to survive.”

The room became silent.

Noah stood in the hallway, listening.

Ethan’s father immediately noticed him.

“Noah, buddy, you should go back to your room.”

“No.”

The little boy shook his head.

“I want to know.”

Ethan looked at him.

For once, Noah wasn’t scared.

He was brave.

Laura took a deep breath.

“The doctors said something was wrong.”

“With me?”

“No.”

She looked at Noah’s bedroom.

“With you.”

Ethan froze.

“What?”

“When you were born, you had a rare condition.”

His father stepped closer.

“The doctors couldn’t explain it.”

Laura continued.

“They thought you wouldn’t live more than a few days.”

Ethan stared.

“But I’m fine.”

“Yes.”

Laura smiled sadly.

“Because someone saved you.”

“Who?”

Nobody answered.

Then his father spoke.

“Richard.”

The name felt like poison.

Ethan’s face changed.

“Richard?”

His father nodded.

“At the time, he was working with doctors studying genetic conditions.”

Ethan felt sick.

“He saved me?”

Laura nodded.

“But there was a price.”

The room became colder.

“What price?”

Laura looked at him.

“He wanted access to your medical records.”

Ethan’s stomach dropped.

“Why?”

“Because he believed you were proof that his research worked.”

Ethan stepped back.

“So my whole life
”

His voice broke.

“Someone was watching me?”

Laura nodded.

“I tried to stop him.”

“Then why did you let him near us?”

“I didn’t know the truth until years later.”

The pain in her voice was real.

But Ethan still struggled.

“So Noah
”

His eyes moved toward his little brother.

“Was he born because of me?”

Laura shook her head.

“No.”

She walked toward Noah.

“Noah was born because he was our miracle.”

She touched his cheek.

“He was never an experiment.”

Noah looked up.

“Then why did everyone want me?”

Laura hugged him.

“Because they saw something valuable.”

Noah looked scared.

“But I’m just Noah.”

Ethan immediately knelt beside him.

“And that’s all you need to be.”

The moment was interrupted by a loud crash.

Everyone turned.

A window shattered.

A note flew into the room.

Ethan picked it up.

His face changed as he read it.

“You found the past. Now find the person who betrayed you.”

Below the message was one name.

Laura’s eyes widened.

Because she knew exactly who it was.

“Who?”

Ethan looked at her.

May you like

She whispered:

“My sister.”
