Chapter 2 - THE SECRET MY MOTHER LEFT BEHIND

Ethan couldn’t move.

He couldn’t breathe.

The woman standing at the courtroom door looked like someone from a dream.

Or a nightmare.

Because for years, Ethan had forced himself to accept one painful truth.

His mother was gone.

Dead.

Buried.

Never coming back.

“No
”

His voice was barely a whisper.

The woman took a step forward.

“Ethan
”

He stepped back.

“Don’t.”

The courtroom watched as confusion spread across every face.

Noah looked between them.

“Ethan?”

The little boy grabbed his brother’s hand.

“Who is she?”

Ethan didn’t answer.

He couldn’t.

The woman wiped tears from her face.

“My name is Claire Bennett.”

She looked at Noah.

“I knew your mother.”

The lawyer immediately stood.

“Your Honor, we need clarification. Who is this woman?”

Claire looked at Ethan.

“I was your mother’s closest friend.”

Ethan laughed once.

But there was no happiness in it.

“My mother didn’t have friends.”

The words came out bitter.

“She disappeared.”

Claire’s face broke.

“She didn’t leave because she wanted to.”

Ethan’s eyes narrowed.

“Then why?”

Silence.

A dangerous silence.

Claire looked around the courtroom.

Then she lowered her voice.

“Because someone made her.”

The room exploded with whispers.

The judge slammed her gavel.

“Order!”

But Ethan barely heard anything.

His entire childhood suddenly felt like a lie.

“Who?”

Claire looked at him.

“Your father.”

Ethan froze.

“My father is dead.”

Claire shook her head.

“No.”

Another shock.

“Noah’s father died two years ago.”

Ethan’s voice became angry.

“You don’t know what you’re talking about.”

Claire reached into her bag.

She pulled out an envelope.

“I kept this because I promised your mother I would give it to you when you were old enough.”

Ethan stared.

“What is it?”

“A letter.”

“For me?”

Claire nodded.

“From your mother.”

Noah looked up.

“Mommy wrote us something?”

Claire’s eyes filled with sadness.

“She wrote it every month.”

Ethan’s heart started pounding.

“Every month?”

“Yes.”

“Then why didn’t I get them?”

Claire looked toward the courthouse hallway.

And for the first time

fear appeared on her face.

“Because someone was making sure you never saw them.”

Ethan felt anger replacing the pain.

“Who?”

Claire opened her mouth.

But before she could answer

the courtroom doors slammed open again.

A man walked inside.

Everyone turned.

Ethan recognized him instantly.

His father’s old business partner.

Richard Cole.

The man who had helped manage their family after his mother disappeared.

Richard smiled calmly.

Too calmly.

“Ethan.”

The teenager’s blood ran cold.

Richard looked at Claire.

“You should have stayed away.”

Claire stepped back.

The judge immediately noticed the tension.

“Who are you?”

Richard smiled.

“I’m someone who knows the truth.”

He looked directly at Ethan.

“And the truth is
”

He paused.

“Your mother didn’t disappear.”

Ethan stared.

Richard continued.

“She ran away.”

Noah covered his ears.

“Stop
”

Ethan’s fists clenched.

“Why would she leave us?”

Richard smiled.

A cold, cruel smile.

“Because she didn’t want you.”

The words hit harder than any punch.

Ethan looked broken.

But then Claire shouted.

“That’s a lie!”

Everyone turned.

Claire pointed at Richard.

“She was running because she found out what you did.”

Richard’s smile disappeared.

The courtroom went silent.

The judge leaned forward.

“What did he do?”

Claire looked at Ethan.

May you like

Then she said the words that changed everything.

“Your mother discovered who was responsible for your father’s death.”
