CHAPTER 25 — THE EMPIRE THAT HAD TO DIE

Five minutes.
That was all Angelo Valenti left behind.
Not a warning.
Not a message.
A decision.
A final command.
DESTROY EVERYTHING.
---
The countdown continued.
04:59.
04:58.
Nobody understood.
Except Marco.
And the fear on his face told Damian everything.
“What did my father build?”
Marco looked at the screens.
“A cage.”
Damian’s eyes narrowed.
“Explain.”
Marco took a slow breath.
“Angelo knew he couldn't destroy the system from the outside.”
A pause.
“So he built something inside it.”
---
Garrett looked at the files.
“The Russo empire.”
Marco nodded.
“Yes.”
Silence.
Damian stared.
“My empire was never meant to grow.”
“No.”
Marco looked at him.
“It was meant to attract them.”
---
The truth was worse than any betrayal.
Angelo Valenti didn't build a criminal empire because he wanted power.
He built a trap.
A structure large enough.
Powerful enough.
Visible enough.
That every person controlling the underground world would eventually touch it.
Invest in it.
Depend on it.
Expose themselves.
---
Hazel looked at Damian.
“So everything…”
She struggled to finish.
“All the companies?”
Marco nodded.
“All the alliances.”
A pause.
“All the enemies.”
Damian looked away.
“Me.”
Marco didn't answer.
Because that was the hardest truth.
Damian wasn't the victim of the plan.
He was the center of it.
---
04:00.
The system began deleting files.
One by one.
Accounts.
Networks.
Names.
Everything connected to the Russo organization.
Garrett watched.
“If this continues, the entire structure collapses.”
Damian nodded.
“That’s the point.”
Everyone looked at him.
Hazel frowned.
“You’re accepting this?”
Damian stared at the destruction happening on the screens.
For years, this empire was everything.
His identity.
His protection.
His reason to wake up.
Now it was disappearing.
And somehow…
he felt lighter.
---
Victor stepped forward.
“You know what happens if this goes public.”
Damian looked at him.
“Yes.”
“Everyone who worked for you.”
“Yes.”
“Everyone who depended on your organization.”
“Yes.”
Victor studied him.
“And you're willing to lose it?”
Damian was silent.
Then:
“Yes.”
---
Nobody expected that answer.
Especially Damian.
Because years ago, he would have burned the world before losing control.
Now…
he was willing to lose control to stop hurting it.
---
03:15.
A new message appeared.
FINAL DECISION REQUIRED.
Three options.
PRESERVE THE EMPIRE.
DESTROY THE EMPIRE.
TRANSFER CONTROL.
Garrett stared.
“There’s a third option.”
Hazel looked at the screen.
“No.”
Everyone looked at her.
“Why?”
“Because that’s the trap.”
She pointed at the option.
“Transfer control means someone else becomes what Damian was.”
A pause.
“Another person sits at the top.”
Damian nodded.
“She’s right.”
---
The screen changed.
Vivian appeared.
But she looked different.
Not confident.
Not amused.
Tired.
“You finally understand.”
Damian looked at her.
“You wanted me to choose destruction.”
“No.”
A pause.
“I wanted to see if you were capable of sacrifice.”
---
Damian almost smiled.
“You sound like my father.”
Vivian looked away.
For a second…
something human appeared.
Then disappeared.
“My father taught me the same lesson.”
Everyone froze.
Hazel stared.
“What?”
Vivian looked at her.
“Angelo Valenti was my mentor too.”
Silence.
Damian frowned.
“No.”
“Yes.”
A pause.
“He trained many people.”
Her eyes moved toward Hazel.
“But only one person mattered.”
Hazel whispered:
“Me.”
---
The final pieces connected.
Angelo had not only protected Damian.
He had created a network of people who could fight the hidden organization.
Victor.
Claire.
Elias.
Even Vivian.
They were all connected.
But they chose different paths.
Some chose protection.
Some chose control.
Some chose power.
---
02:00.
The building shook.
The system was reaching its final stage.
Garrett looked worried.
“We need to leave.”
Damian didn't move.
“Not yet.”
“Damian.”
He looked at the screens.
The names.
The victims.
The damage.
Everything created in his name.
“No.”
A pause.
“I need to finish this.”
---
Hazel stepped beside him.
“What are you going to do?”
Damian looked at her.
“The thing I should have done twenty years ago.”
“What?”
“Stop running.”
---
He opened the final protocol.
A message appeared.
AUTHORIZED USER REQUIRED.
Damian placed his hand on the scanner.
ACCESS DENIED.
Everyone froze.
Garrett looked confused.
“Why?”
Damian stared.
Then understood.
“The system doesn't recognize Damian Russo.”
A pause.
“It recognizes Angelo Valenti's son.”
---
The screen changed.
A new name appeared.
DAMIAN ANGELO VALENTI
Hazel looked at him.
He stared back.
For twenty-five years, he buried that name.
Now it was the key.
He entered it.
ACCESS GRANTED.
---
The final protocol opened.
Not a weapon.
Not an explosion.
A release.
Every hidden file.
Every organization.
Every corrupt connection.
Every person who controlled the system.
Was prepared to go public.
---
Vivian stared.
“You’ll destroy everything.”
Damian looked at the screen.
“No.”
A pause.
“I’m exposing it.”
“You’ll lose everything.”
Damian looked around.
At Garrett.
Victor.
Hazel.
The people who stayed.
“No.”
A small pause.
“I’ll finally know what I have.”
---
00:30.
The upload began.
The world was about to see everything.
Then suddenly…
the system stopped.
Damian frowned.
“What happened?”
Garrett checked.
“Someone canceled it.”
Everyone turned.
Because only one person had access.
Hazel.
She stood near the control panel.
Her face was unreadable.
Damian stared.
“Hazel?”
She looked at him.
And whispered:
“I’m sorry.”
---
The room froze.
Because after everything…
after all the truth…
after all the trust they rebuilt…
Hazel had stopped the final protocol.
Damian stepped closer.
“Why?”
Hazel looked at the screen.
A single file appeared.
One hidden file.
One name.
HAZEL BROOKS — FINAL MEMORY RESTORATION
Her voice shook.
“Because before you destroy everything…”
A pause.
“You need to remember what happened the night you forgot me.”
---
Damian stared.
“What?”
Hazel looked at him.
“The real reason you lost your memory.”
The screen opened.
A video appeared.
A young Damian.
A young Hazel.
And one final secret.
A secret nobody had known.
Not Elias.
Not Vivian.
Not even Angelo.
---
Hazel whispered:
“The night your father died…”
A pause.
“You didn't just save me.”
May you like
She looked at Damian.
“You saved me from yourself.”
