CHAPTER 1 — THE WOMAN WHO WALKED INTO THE LION’S DEN

The first time Damian Russo realized his secretary had been lying to him…

was the same moment he realized she had saved his life.

The bullet was still inside the wall.

Three inches above where his head had been.

And the only person in the entire building who knew why…

was the woman he fired that morning.

---

“Get out.”

Damian Russo didn’t raise his voice.

He didn’t need to.

Men feared him because he never had to shout.

The entire 72nd floor of the Apex Building had learned one simple rule:

When Damian Russo became quiet, someone was about to lose everything.

Hazel Brooks stood across from his desk.

Thirty-two years old.

Beige cardigan.

Black flats.

Hair clipped neatly behind her head.

The same woman who had organized his schedule for three years.

The same woman who knew every meeting, every enemy, every weakness inside his organization.

And somehow…

the same woman Damian had never truly looked at.

“Understood, Mr. Russo.”

That was all she said.

No begging.

No tears.

No angry speech.

Damian almost hated her calmness.

Most people fought when they were losing something.

Hazel simply accepted it.

She picked up the white envelope containing her severance pay.

Two months.

Cash.

Enough money to disappear.

“That's it?” Damian asked.

Hazel stopped near the door.

For a second, he thought she might finally show emotion.

She didn’t.

“You already made your decision.”

Then she left.

The door closed softly.

Too softly.

And somehow that bothered him more than an argument would have.

---

Twenty-four hours later, Damian stood inside a secure room beneath the Apex Building.

Garrett, his head of security, pressed play.

The screen came alive.

A parking garage.

Two weeks earlier.

Damian watched Hazel walk across the concrete floor carrying his contract documents.

She looked exactly the same.

Small.

Quiet.

Invisible.

Then a man stepped from behind a pillar.

A gun appeared.

Damian leaned closer.

“What is this?”

Garrett didn’t answer.

The footage continued.

The attacker grabbed Hazel’s shoulder.

Everyone in the room expected her to panic.

She didn’t.

She moved.

Fast.

Too fast.

One second she was holding papers.

The next second the attacker was on the ground.

His weapon disappeared into her hand.

She checked the magazine.

Calmly.

Professionally.

Then she fixed her cardigan, picked up the contracts, and walked away.

Like nothing happened.

Like she had only dropped a pen.

Damian stared.

“That was her?”

Garrett nodded.

“Yes.”

“No.”

Damian shook his head.

“That’s impossible.”

Garrett looked at him.

“You keep saying that.”

A pause.

“Usually right before something proves you wrong.”

Damian ignored him.

“Who is she?”

Garrett looked back at the screen.

“That’s the question.”

---

Three years earlier.

Hazel Brooks walked into the Apex Building carrying a cheap handbag and a resume printed on regular paper.

No expensive degree.

No impressive references.

No powerful family name.

The receptionist looked at her resume and frowned.

“You know this is for Damian Russo’s office, right?”

Hazel nodded.

“Yes.”

The receptionist lowered her voice.

“People quit that job.”

Hazel looked toward the elevator.

“Why?”

The receptionist hesitated.

“Because they realize money isn’t worth dealing with him.”

Hazel stared at the elevator doors.

Then quietly said:

“I’m not here for the money.”

The receptionist laughed.

A nervous laugh.

“Everyone says that.”

The elevator opened.

Hazel stepped inside.

And nobody knew that the quiet woman carrying a cheap handbag had just walked directly into the most dangerous office in Chicago.

---

Damian first noticed Hazel because she didn’t react to him.

Everyone reacted.

Executives became nervous.

Enemies became careful.

Employees became terrified.

Hazel?

She simply handed him his coffee.

“Double espresso.”

Damian looked up.

“I didn’t ask for one.”

“No.”

She placed it on his desk.

“You looked like you needed it.”

He stared at her.

Most people would apologize.

Hazel just stood there.

Waiting.

“You always talk like that?”

“Like what?”

“Like you know better.”

A small pause.

Hazel looked at the coffee.

Then back at him.

“Sometimes I do.”

Damian almost smiled.

Almost.

That was the first time he noticed her.

Not because she was beautiful.

Not because she was mysterious.

Because she was the only person in his world who wasn’t trying to impress him.

---

But Damian made one mistake.

He thought silence meant weakness.

He thought a woman who avoided attention had nothing to hide.

He thought Hazel Brooks was just a secretary.

And that mistake was going to cost him everything.

---

One week after firing her, Damian received an anonymous package.

No sender.

No address.

Inside was a single flash drive.

And a note.

Three words.

YOU NEVER SAW HER.

Damian plugged it in.

The first video appeared.

Hazel.

Standing outside his office.

Listening.

Watching.

Protecting.

Then the second video appeared.

Then the third.

His expression slowly changed.

Because every dangerous moment Damian had survived over the last three years…

had one thing in common.

Hazel Brooks was always there.

And then the final video loaded.

The date was from six months earlier.

The title made Damian freeze.

TARGET: DAMIAN RUSSO

His hand tightened around the mouse.

May you like

Because the person holding the gun in the video…

was someone inside his own organization.
