CHAPTER 17 — THE MASTER WHO CAME BACK FOR HIS WEAPON

The sound of footsteps was the only thing anyone could hear.
Slow.
Calm.
Confident.
The kind of footsteps made by someone who knew nobody in the room could stop him.
Hazel knew those footsteps.
She remembered them from when she was twelve.
From dark rooms.
Cold floors.
Long nights.
From the person who taught her how to survive.
And how to stop feeling.
---
Elias Crane stepped out of the darkness.
Older.
Calmer.
Almost ordinary.
That was what made him terrifying.
Monsters rarely looked like monsters.
Sometimes they wore expensive coats.
Sometimes they spoke softly.
Sometimes they smiled while destroying someone's entire life.
Elias looked at Hazel.
Not Damian.
Not Victor.
Her.
“There you are.”
Hazel’s expression hardened.
“Don’t call me that.”
Elias tilted his head.
“Hannah?”
Her jaw tightened.
“Yes.”
A pause.
“I’m not her anymore.”
Elias smiled.
“That’s the problem.”
---
Damian immediately moved between them.
A small movement.
But everyone noticed.
Especially Hazel.
Elias looked amused.
“Still protecting her.”
Damian said nothing.
Elias continued.
“After everything?”
A pause.
“You know what she was sent to do.”
Damian’s eyes remained cold.
“I know.”
Everyone looked at him.
Even Hazel.
Because that answer surprised her.
Elias smiled.
“And you still stand there?”
Damian looked at Hazel.
Then back at Elias.
“Yes.”
---
The room went silent.
Because Damian Russo had spent his entire life believing loyalty was earned.
Through usefulness.
Through obedience.
Through fear.
But now…
he was choosing someone who had lied to him.
Someone who had been sent to destroy him.
And Elias hated that.
---
“You really are disappointing.”
Elias looked at Hazel.
“I spent years creating you.”
Hazel stared.
“No.”
A pause.
“You broke me.”
For the first time…
Elias’s face changed.
Not anger.
Something closer to irritation.
Because Hazel was no longer the child who listened.
“You survived because of me.”
Hazel nodded.
“Yes.”
A pause.
“And I hate that you were right.”
---
The words hit harder than an insult.
Because Hazel didn’t deny what Elias gave her.
The skills.
The discipline.
The instincts.
She simply refused to belong to him.
---
Victor stepped forward.
“You ruined enough lives.”
Elias looked at him.
“Victor Brooks.”
A small smile.
“Still pretending you are the good man.”
Victor’s expression hardened.
“You used children.”
Elias shrugged.
“I created survivors.”
“No.”
Victor shook his head.
“You created weapons.”
Elias smiled.
“Exactly.”
---
Damian watched the conversation.
Something bothered him.
Elias wasn't trying to escape.
He wasn't trying to fight.
He wanted them talking.
Waiting.
Distracted.
Damian looked around.
Then noticed.
A small red light blinking near the ceiling.
A camera.
Live feed.
Elias wasn't here for them.
He was showing someone.
---
“Who is watching?”
Elias looked at him.
A little surprised.
Then smiled.
“Good.”
A pause.
“You’re finally paying attention.”
Damian looked toward the camera.
“Who?”
Elias didn’t answer.
Instead, every screen in the room turned on.
A new video appeared.
Not old.
Not from twenty years ago.
Live.
The Apex Building.
Damian’s office.
His empire.
His people.
His home.
And someone was sitting behind his desk.
---
Everyone froze.
Because the person sitting there was impossible.
Not dead.
Not missing.
Just hidden.
The person who had controlled Damian’s entire organization from the shadows.
The person who had manipulated Michael.
The person who had funded Elias.
A woman.
Older.
Elegant.
Cold eyes.
Hazel looked at the screen.
Then whispered:
“No…”
---
Damian turned.
“You know her?”
Hazel couldn’t answer.
Her face had lost color.
Because this was someone from the beginning.
Someone from the training rooms.
Someone who stood beside Elias.
Someone who gave orders.
---
Elias watched her reaction.
“Tell him.”
Hazel stayed silent.
“Tell Damian who she is.”
Damian looked between them.
“Hazel.”
A long pause.
Finally, she whispered:
“She was my first handler.”
Garrett frowned.
“Handler?”
Hazel nodded.
“She assigned missions.”
A pause.
“She chose targets.”
Damian looked at the screen.
“Her name?”
Hazel swallowed.
“Vivian Crane.”
Silence.
Elias smiled.
“My sister.”
---
The pieces started connecting.
Michael.
Elias.
Vivian.
Hazel.
Damian.
A chain that stretched back twenty years.
A chain built around him.
---
Vivian looked into the camera.
Her voice came through the speakers.
“Damian Russo.”
Everyone turned.
She smiled.
“You always believed you built your empire.”
A pause.
“You didn't.”
Damian’s face hardened.
“Then what did I build?”
Vivian answered:
“Exactly what we needed.”
---
The screens changed.
Documents appeared.
Financial records.
Political connections.
Private deals.
Every major decision Damian made over twenty years.
Every expansion.
Every enemy removed.
Every alliance created.
All connected.
All influenced.
All guided.
---
Hazel stared.
“No.”
Vivian smiled.
“Yes.”
A pause.
“You thought you were becoming powerful.”
She looked at Damian.
“But you were becoming predictable.”
---
Damian stepped closer to the screen.
“You manipulated me.”
Vivian laughed softly.
“No.”
A pause.
“We understood you.”
The words angered him more.
Because part of him knew they were true.
---
Elias looked at Hazel.
“Now you understand.”
She stared back.
“What?”
“You were never sent to kill Damian.”
A pause.
“You were sent because you were the only person who could stop him.”
Hazel froze.
Damian looked at her.
“What does that mean?”
Elias smiled.
“Your mission changed.”
The room became silent.
“Because twenty years ago…”
A pause.
“We realized something.”
Elias looked directly at Damian.
“The only thing capable of destroying Damian Russo…”
was not an enemy.
Not a bullet.
Not a rival.
“It was the one person he would never expect to betray him.”
---
Hazel slowly understood.
Her breathing changed.
“No…”
Elias stepped closer.
“You were never the weapon.”
A pause.
“You were the trigger.”
---
Suddenly, Vivian’s voice returned.
“Enough.”
Everyone looked at the screen.
She pressed a button.
A countdown appeared.
00:10:00
Damian frowned.
“What is that?”
Vivian smiled.
“The final test.”
Hazel stared.
“What test?”
Vivian looked at her.
“To see if you are still my creation…”
A pause.
“Or if Damian really changed you.”
---
The countdown began.
Ten minutes.
And then Vivian said the words that made Hazel’s blood run cold.
“Because when the timer reaches zero…”
“The building explodes.”
Silence.
Damian looked at Hazel.
Hazel looked at Damian.
And both understood the same thing.
This time…
May you like
there was no enemy to fight.
Only a choice to make.
