CHAPTER 18 — THE FINAL TEST OF HAZEL BROOKS

Ten minutes.
That was all they had.
Ten minutes before the Apex Building became a graveyard.
Ten minutes before thousands of lives could disappear.
And somewhere in the middle of all that chaos…
Vivian Crane was waiting for one answer.
Not from Damian.
From Hazel.
---
The countdown continued.
09:42.
09:41.
09:40.
Every second echoed through the room.
Garrett moved immediately toward the security system.
“I can stop the timer.”
Hazel looked at him.
“No.”
Everyone turned.
Garrett frowned.
“Why?”
“Because it’s not a normal bomb.”
Damian looked at her.
“You know?”
Hazel nodded slowly.
“Vivian doesn’t use simple weapons.”
A pause.
“She uses decisions.”
---
Damian looked toward the screen.
Vivian sat calmly in his office.
Drinking coffee.
Almost bored.
“You’re enjoying this.”
Vivian smiled.
“Not really.”
A pause.
“I’m studying.”
“Studying what?”
She looked at Hazel.
“Whether a person can escape what they were created to become.”
---
Hazel stared at the screen.
For years, she believed her greatest battle was surviving.
Then she believed it was protecting Damian.
She was wrong.
The real battle was answering one question.
Who was she without the people who shaped her?
---
09:00.
Garrett opened the building plans.
“There are three possible devices.”
Damian looked at him.
“Three?”
“Yes.”
Hazel walked closer.
“Not three.”
Garrett looked confused.
“What?”
She pointed at the blueprint.
“Four.”
Everyone looked at her.
“You missed the service floor.”
Garrett frowned.
“How did you know?”
Hazel didn’t answer.
Because she remembered.
Training rooms.
Blueprints.
Exercises.
Vivian had made her memorize entire buildings.
Every escape route.
Every weakness.
Every place where someone could hide a weapon.
Damian watched her.
“You knew this building before you worked here.”
Hazel was silent.
Then:
“Yes.”
A pause.
“I was assigned to study it.”
---
The words hurt.
Even now.
Even after everything.
Because Damian still had moments where he remembered.
She entered his life as a mission.
Not a choice.
---
08:15.
They reached the service elevator.
The doors opened.
The basement level was dark.
Too quiet.
Hazel stopped.
Damian noticed.
“What?”
She looked around.
“Someone is here.”
Garrett raised his weapon.
“Where?”
Hazel closed her eyes.
Listening.
Breathing.
Then:
“Behind us.”
Everyone turned.
Nothing.
A second later…
the lights went out.
---
A man attacked from the darkness.
Fast.
Professional.
Garrett fired.
Missed.
The attacker moved like Hazel.
Because he was trained like Hazel.
Damian noticed immediately.
“You know him.”
Hazel blocked a strike.
“Yes.”
“Who?”
She pushed him back.
“My replacement.”
---
The man smiled.
“You got soft.”
Hazel stared.
“You got worse.”
The fight was quick.
Not flashy.
Not loud.
Just controlled movements.
Two people trained the same way.
One still following orders.
One trying to escape them.
---
The man whispered:
“Vivian said you would hesitate.”
Hazel grabbed his arm.
“I don’t hesitate.”
A pause.
“I choose.”
She disarmed him.
But she didn’t kill him.
Everyone noticed.
Especially Damian.
The old Hazel would have.
The trained Hazel would have.
But this Hazel didn't.
---
07:00.
They found the first device.
Garrett examined it.
“This isn't a bomb.”
Damian frowned.
“What?”
Garrett looked at Hazel.
“She was right.”
Hazel stepped closer.
The device wasn’t designed to destroy the building.
It was connected to the security system.
The fire alarms.
The elevators.
The emergency doors.
Vivian wasn’t trying to blow up Apex.
She was trying to trap everyone inside.
---
Damian looked at the screen.
“Why?”
Vivian answered.
“To see what you do.”
A pause.
“Twenty years ago, Damian chose power.”
Her eyes moved toward Hazel.
“Now we see if he chooses differently.”
---
06:10.
A new message appeared.
CHOOSE ONE FLOOR TO SAVE.
Below it:
72ND FLOOR — DAMIAN’S OFFICE
1ST FLOOR — EMPLOYEES
BASEMENT — SECURITY
---
Garrett stared.
“She wants us to choose.”
Damian looked at Hazel.
“No.”
Hazel shook her head.
“She wants me to choose.”
Everyone became quiet.
Because they understood.
This wasn't Damian's test.
It was hers.
---
Vivian appeared on the screen.
“Hannah.”
Hazel looked up.
“I know what you are.”
A pause.
“You were created to make sacrifices.”
Hazel said nothing.
“You were trained to pick the mission over people.”
Another pause.
“So choose.”
---
Damian stepped closer.
“No.”
Hazel looked at him.
“Damian.”
“You don't have to do this.”
A small smile appeared on her face.
“Took you long enough to say that.”
He almost smiled.
Almost.
Then she looked at the screen.
“I choose everyone.”
Vivian’s expression changed.
“That is not an option.”
Hazel walked toward the control panel.
“Then you made a mistake.”
---
She entered a command.
The system rejected it.
ACCESS DENIED.
Vivian smiled.
“You still think you can rewrite yourself?”
Hazel looked at the screen.
“No.”
A pause.
“I know I can.”
She removed a small device from her pocket.
Garrett stared.
“What is that?”
Hazel answered:
“The reason Vivian never found me.”
---
Damian looked surprised.
“You had a backup plan?”
Hazel shook her head.
“No.”
A pause.
“I had insurance.”
---
The device connected.
The countdown stopped.
05:00.
Then restarted.
But backward.
04:59.
04:58.
Everyone stared.
“What did you do?”
Hazel looked at Vivian.
“I gave control back.”
Vivian’s smile disappeared.
Because for the first time…
Hazel had done something Vivian didn't teach her.
She trusted someone else.
---
The screen changed.
A hidden file opened.
One Vivian had tried to erase.
One Hazel had carried for twenty years.
A video.
A young Hazel.
A young Damian.
And a final message recorded before everything went wrong.
Damian watched.
Because this was the truth nobody knew.
The reason Hazel was sent.
The reason Damian forgot.
The reason Elias and Vivian spent twenty years controlling them.
The young Damian on the screen looked directly at the camera.
And said:
“If you’re watching this…”
A pause.
“Then I failed to protect her.”
Hazel covered her mouth.
Because she recognized the voice.
It was Damian.
Twenty years earlier.
Making a promise.
Again.
“But I need you to know something.”
Young Damian looked at little Hazel.
“She saved me first.”
The video ended.
Nobody spoke.
And for the first time…
Damian Russo realized something.
May you like
He was never Hazel’s protector.
He was the person she had been protecting all along.
