CHAPTER 20 — PROJECT RUSSO: THE MAN THEY CREATED

The name on the screen was only two words.

But it changed everything.

PROJECT RUSSO.

Not Damian Russo.

Not the mafia empire.

Not the man standing on the 72nd floor.

A project.

An experiment.

A plan.

For a few seconds, nobody in the room breathed.

---

Damian stared at the screen.

His entire life had been built around one belief.

That he became who he was because of his choices.

His anger.

His ambition.

His hunger.

But now…

a file existed with his name on it.

A file that suggested someone had been watching him long before he became powerful.

Long before anyone knew his name.

---

Garrett stepped closer.

“Open it.”

Nobody moved.

Damian looked at the screen.

Then slowly nodded.

“Open it.”

The file loaded.

Hundreds of pages.

Photos.

Reports.

Psychological evaluations.

Everything about Damian.

His childhood.

His family.

His fears.

His weaknesses.

His habits.

His reactions.

Garrett’s face changed.

“This isn’t possible.”

Damian looked at him.

“Why?”

“Because some of these records are older than your organization.”

Silence.

---

Hazel stepped closer.

Her eyes moved across the documents.

Then stopped.

A line.

A sentence.

She read it quietly.

“Subject identified at age fourteen.”

Damian froze.

Fourteen.

That was before the empire.

Before the money.

Before the violence.

Before he became Damian Russo.

“What subject?”

Hazel didn’t answer.

Because she already knew.

---

The next page appeared.

PROJECT RUSSO

OBJECTIVE: IDENTIFY AND DEVELOP HIGH-VALUE LEADERSHIP POTENTIAL.

METHOD: ENVIRONMENTAL PRESSURE, CONTROLLED LOSS, STRATEGIC MANIPULATION.

Garrett looked at Damian.

“They studied you.”

Damian’s expression hardened.

“No.”

A pause.

“They shaped me.”

---

Vivian’s voice suddenly came through the speakers.

Everyone turned.

She was still inside the Apex Building.

Still watching.

“You always were intelligent, Damian.”

His eyes narrowed.

“Come out.”

She smiled.

“Why?”

A pause.

“You finally found the truth.”

---

Damian walked toward the screen.

“You created my enemies.”

“No.”

Vivian shook her head.

“We created opportunities.”

His face darkened.

“You killed people.”

“Yes.”

The answer was immediate.

Cold.

“That is what happens when people become obstacles.”

Hazel stared at her.

“You never saw anyone as human.”

Vivian looked at her.

“I saw exactly what they were.”

A pause.

“Resources.”

---

Damian looked back at the files.

“What was the purpose?”

Vivian smiled.

“Power.”

“That’s not an answer.”

“No.”

A pause.

“It’s the only answer that matters.”

---

Twenty-five years earlier.

A young Damian sat inside a private office.

Not a criminal office.

A corporate one.

A woman in a suit placed a folder in front of him.

“Your father failed.”

Young Damian looked angry.

“My father was killed.”

The woman nodded.

“Exactly.”

She slid the folder closer.

“You can become another victim.”

A pause.

“Or you can become someone nobody can touch.”

Young Damian stared.

“What do you want?”

The woman smiled.

“Nothing.”

A pause.

“Just to see what you become.”

---

Back in the present.

Damian closed the file.

His hands were shaking.

Almost invisible.

But Hazel saw it.

Because she knew him now.

“You were a child.”

Damian looked at her.

“I was old enough.”

“No.”

Her voice was firmer.

“You were a child.”

The room went quiet.

Nobody talked to Damian like that.

Nobody.

Except her.

---

Damian looked away.

For years, he hated weakness.

Especially his own.

But now he wondered something.

How much of his strength was actually his?

How much was something someone built into him?

---

Garrett continued reading.

Then stopped.

“Damian.”

Something in his voice made everyone turn.

“What?”

Garrett looked uncomfortable.

“There’s another section.”

Hazel approached.

“What section?”

Garrett read slowly.

FINAL CONDITION:

REMOVE EMOTIONAL ATTACHMENTS.

CREATE ISOLATION.

ENSURE SUBJECT BELIEVES TRUST IS WEAKNESS.

Nobody spoke.

Because everyone understood.

---

Damian looked at Hazel.

The words were not about money.

Not about crime.

Not about power.

They were about him.

They wanted him alone.

They wanted him unable to trust.

Unable to love.

Unable to depend on anyone.

Because a lonely person was easier to control.

---

Hazel whispered:

“They didn't create a monster.”

Everyone looked at her.

She looked at Damian.

“They created someone who believed he had to become one.”

---

A strange silence filled the room.

Then Damian did something nobody expected.

He deleted the file.

Everyone froze.

“Damian?”

He looked at Garrett.

“I spent my whole life letting other people define me.”

A pause.

“I’m done.”

---

Vivian watched.

And for the first time...

she looked disappointed.

Not angry.

Disappointed.

“You still don’t understand.”

Damian looked at the screen.

“What?”

“You think knowing the truth makes you free.”

A pause.

“It doesn’t.”

The lights flickered.

A final file appeared.

One hidden beneath everything.

Not PROJECT RUSSO.

Something else.

PROJECT HAZEL.

Hazel froze.

“No.”

Damian looked at her.

“What?”

She stepped back.

Because she knew that file.

She had spent years trying to forget it.

Vivian smiled.

“Your stories were always connected.”

A pause.

“You thought Hazel was sent to protect Damian.”

The screen opened.

A photo appeared.

Young Damian.

Young Hazel.

Together.

But below the picture was a sentence.

A sentence that made both of them freeze.

PRIMARY PURPOSE: ENSURE DAMIAN RUSSO NEVER REMEMBERS WHO HE REALLY IS.

Damian looked at Hazel.

Hazel looked back.

And suddenly…

they both understood.

She was never assigned to kill him.

She was assigned to protect a secret.

May you like

A secret about Damian.

A secret even Hazel was never allowed to know.
