CHAPTER 22 — THE WORLD AGAINST DAMIAN RUSSO

The world had always feared Damian Russo.

But fear was different when everyone could see the truth.

---

At 8:00 p.m., every major news station in Chicago interrupted its broadcast.

Every phone received the same alert.

Every screen showed the same image.

Damian Russo.

A name people whispered.

A man whose influence stretched across the city.

A man who was now exposed.

---

The first video appeared.

Damian entering private meetings.

The second.

Money transfers.

The third.

People disappearing.

The fourth.

A list of names.

Enemies.

Allies.

Victims.

Everyone who had been touched by the Russo empire.

The public saw a monster.

They didn’t see the boy.

They didn’t see the manipulation.

They saw only the result.

---

Inside the Apex Building, nobody spoke.

The entire city was watching.

Garrett looked at the screens.

“They’re destroying your reputation.”

Damian didn’t answer.

Because he knew.

This was not about reputation.

Reputation could be rebuilt.

This was about control.

Someone wanted the world to see him as nothing but a villain.

---

Hazel watched the broadcast.

Her face was tense.

“This is what Vivian wanted.”

Damian looked at her.

“To expose me?”

“No.”

A pause.

“To define you.”

---

The screen changed.

A journalist appeared.

“We are receiving reports that Damian Russo has been connected to decades of organized criminal activity…”

Damian turned away.

The words didn't hurt.

Not because they were false.

Because some of them were true.

---

Victor stood quietly near the window.

“You’re not going to deny everything.”

Damian looked at him.

“No.”

Victor seemed surprised.

“Why?”

Damian watched the city.

“Because some of it happened.”

Silence.

Garrett looked at him.

“Damian…”

He shook his head.

“No.”

A pause.

“I spent years convincing myself every choice was necessary.”

He looked at the screen.

“But necessary doesn’t mean right.”

---

Hazel stared at him.

Because that was the first time she heard Damian take responsibility.

Not explain.

Not justify.

Accept.

---

The broadcast continued.

Then something changed.

A new video appeared.

Not from Vivian.

From Damian.

A recording.

One nobody in the room knew existed.

Damian looked confused.

“I didn’t make that.”

Hazel stepped closer.

The video played.

A younger Damian.

Twenty years earlier.

Standing in front of a camera.

But his expression was different.

Calm.

Clear.

Not angry.

Not broken.

“If this message is released…”

Young Damian spoke.

“I failed.”

The room froze.

---

Young Damian continued.

“I know what they will say about me.”

A pause.

“They will say I became a monster.”

He looked directly into the camera.

“And they won’t be completely wrong.”

Damian looked away.

Because hearing his younger self admit that was harder than any accusation.

---

“But there is something people need to understand.”

Young Damian continued.

“I was given every reason to hate.”

A pause.

“And I chose hate too many times.”

Silence.

“But there were people who tried to stop me.”

The video showed photos.

Victor.

Claire.

Hazel.

A younger Hazel.

Damian looked at the screen.

---

“I want one thing remembered.”

Young Damian’s voice became softer.

“I was not created by violence.”

A pause.

“I chose it.”

The video ended.

---

Nobody moved.

Because Damian had just done something nobody expected.

He admitted the truth before the world could force him to.

---

The public reaction changed.

Not immediately.

Not magically.

But slightly.

Because people understood something.

A villain admitting guilt was different from a villain pretending innocence.

---

Then the second part of the broadcast started.

Vivian appeared.

Smiling.

“Beautiful speech.”

Damian looked at the screen.

“Vivian.”

She nodded.

“You finally became the person your father wanted.”

A pause.

“Unfortunately…”

Her expression hardened.

“It’s too late.”

---

A document appeared.

A death certificate.

Damian froze.

Because the name on it was:

ANGELO VALENTI.

The date.

Twenty-five years ago.

The cause of death.

Not natural.

Not an accident.

---

Hazel moved closer.

“What is it?”

Damian couldn’t answer.

Because he already knew.

His father’s death was the event that started everything.

The reason he changed.

The reason he became Damian Russo.

---

Vivian spoke.

“You spent your life searching for who killed your father.”

A pause.

“You blamed Victor.”

Damian stared.

“You blamed enemies.”

Another pause.

“You blamed yourself.”

The screen changed.

A final image appeared.

A photograph.

Angelo Valenti.

Standing beside someone.

Someone Damian recognized.

Someone impossible.

---

Hazel looked at the photo.

Her face changed.

“Elias.”

Damian stared.

Because standing beside his father…

was a younger Elias Crane.

Alive.

Working with him.

---

Vivian smiled.

“Your father was not killed because he was weak.”

A pause.

“He was killed because he discovered the truth.”

Damian stepped closer.

“What truth?”

Vivian looked directly at him.

“That the person closest to him…”

A pause.

“was the one who betrayed him.”

---

The screen went black.

Then one final message appeared.

THE KILLER HAS ALWAYS BEEN BESIDE YOU.

Everyone turned.

Because suddenly the question was not who wanted Damian destroyed.

May you like

The question was:

Who had been standing next to him all along?
