CHAPTER 11 — THE MAN WHO CHOSE TO BECOME THE MONSTER

The hardest truth Damian Russo ever faced…

was not discovering his enemies had lied to him.

It was discovering he had helped them.

---

The office remained silent after the video ended.

Nobody moved.

Nobody spoke.

The screen went black.

But the final words stayed in everyone's mind.

THE BIGGEST BETRAYAL WAS NEVER AGAINST YOU, DAMIAN.

IT WAS COMMITTED BY YOU.

Damian stood completely still.

A man who had survived wars.

A man who had stared down death more times than he could count.

A man who never apologized.

Never hesitated.

Never questioned himself.

Was suddenly questioning everything.

Hazel watched him carefully.

Not like an enemy.

Not like an employee.

Like someone trying to figure out if the person in front of her was still the same man she once believed in.

---

Garrett broke the silence.

“Damian.”

No response.

“Say something.”

Damian slowly looked at him.

“What do you want me to say?”

The question was quiet.

Almost tired.

Garrett had never heard that tone from him.

Not once.

“You need to find out the truth.”

Damian looked at the empty screen.

“I built my entire life on the truth.”

A pause.

“What if it was all wrong?”

Nobody answered.

Because nobody knew how to answer that.

---

Hazel walked toward the door.

Damian noticed.

“Where are you going?”

She stopped.

“You need space.”

“No.”

The answer came too quickly.

Hazel looked surprised.

Damian realized it too.

He had spent years pushing people away.

Now the thought of her leaving felt unbearable.

A strange feeling.

A dangerous one.

“Stay.”

The word sounded unfamiliar.

Hazel stared at him.

“Why?”

Damian opened his mouth.

Then stopped.

Because the honest answer was something he hated.

Because he didn’t want to be alone with the truth.

“I need answers.”

Hazel looked at him.

“You need answers.”

A pause.

“And I’m the only person who knows where to look.”

Damian didn’t deny it.

---

The investigation began immediately.

Garrett opened every old file connected to the warehouse incident twenty years earlier.

Every document.

Every photograph.

Every name.

Most of it had been destroyed.

But Damian had learned something important.

Destroyed evidence was still evidence.

Someone had worked very hard to erase something.

And that meant something existed.

---

Three hours later.

Garrett found the first crack.

A missing police report.

An altered hospital record.

A financial transfer.

All connected to one name.

Michael Voss.

Damian stared at the documents.

“He was involved from the beginning.”

Hazel nodded.

“Yes.”

Damian looked at her.

“You knew.”

“Yes.”

His jaw tightened.

“You keep saying that.”

Hazel looked down.

“I know.”

The answer was so simple it irritated him.

“You lied to me.”

“Yes.”

“You watched me destroy people because of information you knew was false.”

Hazel looked up.

“Yes.”

Damian stepped closer.

“Then why should I trust anything you say?”

Hazel didn’t move.

“You shouldn’t.”

That stopped him.

Most people defended themselves.

Hazel accepted the blame.

“I made choices.”

Her voice lowered.

“Some of them were wrong.”

A pause.

“I convinced myself protecting you gave me the right to control the truth.”

Damian said nothing.

Because that was exactly what he did.

---

For the first time…

he saw the similarity.

They were not opposites.

They were mirrors.

Both believed they knew what was best.

Both hid information.

Both made decisions for other people.

Both called it protection.

---

That night.

Damian returned home.

Something he rarely did.

The mansion felt different.

Too quiet.

He poured a drink.

Didn’t touch it.

He walked through rooms filled with expensive furniture.

Everything he owned represented something.

Power.

Fear.

Control.

But none of it answered the question.

Who was he before Damian Russo became Damian Russo?

---

A sound came from the hallway.

Damian turned.

His weapon was already in his hand.

A woman stood there.

Older.

Weak.

But familiar.

Claire Brooks.

Hazel’s mother.

Alive.

Damian froze.

“How?”

Claire looked at him.

Her eyes were filled with disappointment.

Not fear.

“Because I needed to see if you remembered.”

Damian lowered the weapon slightly.

“Remember what?”

Claire stepped closer.

“The night you saved my daughter.”

Silence.

Damian stared.

“I didn’t save her.”

Claire shook her head.

“You did.”

A pause.

“Then you saved yourself.”

---

Twenty years earlier.

After the warehouse.

After the shooting.

After everyone thought Victor Brooks was dead.

Damian found Claire and Hazel.

They were injured.

Running.

Terrified.

Damian had a choice.

Turn them over.

Or help them disappear.

And he chose.

He helped them escape.

He gave them money.

A new identity.

A way to survive.

But there was one problem.

Someone found out.

And Damian made a second choice.

The choice that changed everything.

---

Claire looked at him.

“You don’t remember because Elias made sure you wouldn’t.”

Damian’s eyes narrowed.

“Elias?”

She nodded.

“He didn’t erase your memory.”

A pause.

“He changed what you believed.”

---

Damian stepped back.

“What does that mean?”

Claire looked toward the window.

“After that night, you wanted revenge.”

A pause.

“You wanted to destroy everyone responsible.”

Damian nodded slowly.

“I remember.”

“But Elias convinced you that Victor betrayed you.”

The room became colder.

“He gave you an enemy.”

Claire looked directly at him.

“And you became exactly what he wanted.”

---

Damian said nothing.

Because somewhere inside…

he knew.

The rage.

The obsession.

The years spent hunting Victor.

It all started from one thing.

A lie.

---

Then Claire said the words that broke him.

“Damian…”

A pause.

“You were never the monster.”

She looked at him.

“You were the man who was forced to become one.”

---

Before Damian could respond…

the lights went out.

Again.

A phone rang.

Not his.

Not Claire’s.

Hazel’s.

She answered.

A distorted voice spoke.

Everyone froze.

Elias.

“I see you finally found the missing piece.”

Hazel grabbed the phone.

“Where are you?”

A quiet laugh.

“Still protecting him?”

Hazel said nothing.

Elias continued.

“That’s your problem, Hannah.”

A pause.

“You always save people who don’t deserve saving.”

Damian’s eyes narrowed.

Because he heard something in Elias’s voice.

Something he recognized.

Ownership.

Like Elias believed Hazel belonged to him.

Then Elias spoke again.

“But now I’m curious.”

A pause.

“Who will you save when you learn Damian Russo is the reason your father died?”

The call ended.

Nobody moved.

Hazel slowly lowered the phone.

And Damian realized something.

May you like

The next truth would not just destroy him.

It would destroy Hazel.
