CHAPTER 14 — THE CHOICE THAT BROKE DAMIAN RUSSO

Damian Russo had spent his entire life making choices.
Hard choices.
Cold choices.
The kind of choices that kept powerful men alive.
Who to trust.
Who to eliminate.
Who to sacrifice.
He always believed he was good at it.
Until Elias Crane gave him a choice that no amount of power could solve.
---
The screen showed two rooms.
Two people.
Two lives.
On the left…
Hazel.
Tied to a chair.
Blood on her forehead.
Still conscious.
Still fighting.
On the right…
Claire Brooks.
Hazel’s mother.
The woman everyone believed was dead.
Weak.
Barely moving.
But alive.
The woman who knew the truth about Damian’s past.
The woman who could finally explain everything.
Elias’s voice filled the room.
“Twenty years ago, you chose one person.”
A pause.
“Tonight, you choose again.”
---
Nobody spoke.
Damian stared at the screens.
His mind moved faster than anyone could see.
Security locations.
Distance.
Possible entry points.
Weapons.
Time.
But the answer remained the same.
He couldn’t reach both.
Garrett looked at him.
“Damian…”
No response.
Victor stepped forward.
“I’ll go after Claire.”
Damian looked at him.
“No.”
Victor frowned.
“You don’t have time.”
“I said no.”
Damian’s voice was sharp.
“Elias wants us separated.”
Hazel’s father stared at him.
“And what are you going to do?”
Damian looked back at the screens.
The answer terrified him.
Because he already knew.
---
Hazel watched Damian through the camera.
Even through the poor video quality…
she knew his expression.
He was calculating.
Planning.
Trying to save everyone.
The same mistake.
Always.
“Damian.”
Her voice came through the speakers.
Everyone looked up.
Hazel looked directly at the camera.
“Don’t choose.”
Damian froze.
“What?”
Hazel swallowed.
“Don’t let him make you become that person again.”
A pause.
“The person who thinks losing one person is acceptable.”
Damian stared.
Because she wasn’t asking him to save her.
She was telling him not to destroy himself.
---
Elias laughed softly.
“Still protecting him.”
Hazel looked toward the camera.
“No.”
A pause.
“I’m stopping him from becoming you.”
For the first time…
Elias’s smile disappeared.
Only for a second.
But everyone saw it.
---
Twenty years earlier.
A younger Damian stood in the same position.
A choice.
A warehouse.
A girl.
A man.
A gun.
Someone told him he could only save one.
And he chose.
That choice created the man he became.
But now…
he remembered something.
Something everyone forgot.
He didn't actually choose.
Someone forced him to believe he did.
---
Damian suddenly turned.
“Garrett.”
Garrett looked at him.
“Sir?”
“How many emergency routes connect these locations?”
Garrett frowned.
“What?”
“Answer me.”
Garrett checked the system.
“Three.”
Damian looked at Victor.
“Elias expects us to choose.”
Victor understood.
“He expects you to think like you did twenty years ago.”
Damian nodded.
Exactly.
Hazel watched him.
And for the first time…
she saw something different.
Not anger.
Not revenge.
A plan.
---
Elias appeared on the screen again.
“You have five minutes.”
Damian ignored him.
He walked toward the equipment room.
Garrett followed.
“What are you doing?”
“Changing the rules.”
Garrett almost smiled.
“That sounds dangerous.”
Damian picked up a weapon.
“It usually is.”
---
The plan was simple.
Which meant it was risky.
Victor would go after Claire.
Garrett would lead security to Hazel.
Damian would create a third path.
The path Elias didn't expect.
Himself.
---
“Absolutely not.”
Garrett looked at Damian.
“You’re walking into a trap.”
“Yes.”
“You know that?”
“Yes.”
“Then why?”
Damian stopped.
For a moment, he looked tired.
Not weak.
Just tired.
“Because for twenty years…”
A pause.
“I kept choosing the mission.”
He looked toward the screen showing Hazel.
“This time, I choose the person.”
---
The rescue began.
The building where Hazel was held was an abandoned medical facility.
Old.
Dark.
Forgotten.
Exactly the kind of place Elias liked.
Garrett’s team moved toward Hazel.
Victor went after Claire.
Damian walked alone.
Straight through the main entrance.
A camera followed him.
Elias watched.
“You came alone.”
Damian looked up.
“I wanted you to see me.”
“Why?”
Damian kept walking.
“Because I wanted you to understand something.”
A pause.
“I’m not the man you created.”
---
Inside Hazel’s room.
She heard footsteps.
Not Elias.
Someone else.
The door opened.
A guard entered.
Hazel waited.
One second.
Two.
Then moved.
She knocked him down.
But before she could escape…
another figure appeared.
Elias.
Clapping slowly.
“Still impressive.”
Hazel stared.
“You wanted Damian.”
“No.”
Elias smiled.
“I wanted to see if he would come.”
A pause.
“And he did.”
---
Damian entered the final hallway.
At the end stood Elias.
Between them…
a glass wall.
On the other side stood Hazel.
Alive.
Damian stopped.
Elias smiled.
“There it is.”
“What?”
“The moment.”
A pause.
“The moment you realize you’re still the same.”
Damian looked at Hazel.
Then at Elias.
“No.”
Elias tilted his head.
“No?”
Damian stepped closer.
“Twenty years ago, I was angry.”
Another step.
“Ten years ago, I was lost.”
Another.
“But today…”
He looked directly at Elias.
“I know exactly who I am.”
---
Elias pressed a button.
The glass door behind Hazel began filling with smoke.
A countdown appeared.
60 seconds.
Hazel looked at Damian.
“Go!”
He didn’t move.
“Damian!”
Still nothing.
Elias watched.
Waiting.
Because he wanted Damian to panic.
To choose.
To become the monster again.
But Damian did something unexpected.
Something Elias never predicted.
He smiled.
---
“Garrett.”
A voice came through Damian’s earpiece.
“Already moving.”
Elias’s expression changed.
Because for the first time…
Damian wasn’t alone.
The system alarms exploded.
Security doors opened.
Sprinklers activated.
The entire facility went into chaos.
Hazel looked confused.
Damian looked at her.
“I finally learned something.”
The glass began cracking.
“What?”
He smiled slightly.
“I don’t have to save people by destroying myself.”
---
The smoke cleared.
The door opened.
Hazel collapsed forward.
Damian caught her.
For a second…
neither spoke.
Then Hazel whispered:
“You came.”
Damian looked at her.
“Of course I did.”
A pause.
“You would have done the same.”
Hazel looked away.
Because that was true.
---
But before they could leave…
a gunshot echoed.
Everyone froze.
Victor stood in the hallway.
Holding Claire.
Alive.
But behind him…
Michael Voss appeared.
Holding a weapon.
Damian turned.
“Michael.”
Michael looked exhausted.
Not angry.
Not evil.
Just broken.
“I tried to stop him.”
A pause.
“I failed.”
Then he pointed the gun.
Not at Damian.
At Elias.
And said:
May you like
“The person you should have feared…”
“was never me.”
