CHAPTER 16 — THE WOMAN WHO CREATED HAZEL BROOKS

For twenty years, Hazel Brooks believed she knew who she was.

A survivor.

A protector.

A woman who spent her life fixing the damage other people caused.

But the woman on the screen had just taken the one thing Hazel trusted most.

Her own memories.

---

The entire room went silent.

Nobody looked at Damian.

Nobody looked at Elias.

Everyone looked at Hazel.

Because the accusation was not about her past.

It was about her purpose.

“You were trained to kill him.”

The words echoed.

Again.

And again.

Hazel stood completely still.

Damian watched her carefully.

Not because he believed the woman.

Because he knew Hazel.

Or at least…

he thought he did.

---

The woman on the screen smiled.

“My name is Clara Voss.”

Michael’s face changed instantly.

No anger.

No surprise.

Pure fear.

Damian noticed.

“You know her.”

Michael didn’t answer.

“Michael.”

A long pause.

“Yes.”

Hazel looked at him.

“How?”

Michael swallowed.

“Because she was there.”

A pause.

“The beginning.”

---

Clara leaned closer to the camera.

“Hannah.”

Hazel flinched.

Nobody called her that except people from her past.

“You were always curious.”

Clara smiled.

“That was your weakness.”

Hazel stared.

“What did you do to me?”

The woman tilted her head.

“I gave you purpose.”

Hazel’s face hardened.

“No.”

“Yes.”

A pause.

“You were a scared little girl with no family.”

Hazel’s hands tightened.

“I gave you skills.”

“You gave me a weapon.”

Clara smiled.

“Exactly.”

---

Damian stepped closer to the screen.

“What do you want?”

Clara looked at him.

For the first time, her smile disappeared.

“You.”

Damian laughed coldly.

“Everyone wants me.”

“No.”

A pause.

“I want what you represent.”

The room became quiet.

“Control.”

---

Clara explained everything.

Not all at once.

Never all at once.

People like her never gave information.

They gave pieces.

Enough to keep people trapped.

Years ago, she had worked with Elias.

Not for him.

With him.

They created something.

A program.

A system.

A way to take damaged children and turn them into tools.

Hazel was one of them.

Except Hazel was different.

Because she resisted.

She remembered kindness.

She remembered Damian.

And that ruined everything.

---

Twenty years earlier.

A young Hazel sat inside a training room.

Clara placed a photograph on the table.

A picture of Damian.

“You know him?”

The little girl looked at the photo.

“Yes.”

“What did he do?”

Hazel stayed silent.

Clara leaned closer.

“He abandoned you.”

The girl looked confused.

“No.”

Clara frowned.

“You think he saved you?”

Hazel nodded.

“He did.”

That was the moment Clara understood.

The girl was not broken.

She was attached.

And attachments made people dangerous.

---

Back in the present.

Damian looked at Hazel.

“You remembered me.”

Hazel didn’t look at him.

“Yes.”

“When?”

She hesitated.

“Every time I saw you.”

That answer surprised him.

“Then why pretend you didn’t?”

Hazel finally looked at him.

“Because I didn’t know if my memory was real.”

A pause.

“Or something someone planted.”

---

The words changed everything.

Because Hazel had not hidden the truth because she wanted power.

She had hidden it because she didn’t trust her own mind.

---

Victor stepped forward.

“You were manipulated.”

Hazel looked at him.

“So were you.”

The sentence hurt.

But Victor accepted it.

Because she was right.

Everyone in the room had been someone’s weapon.

Everyone except maybe Damian.

And even that was becoming uncertain.

---

Clara continued.

“You all keep pretending you are victims.”

She laughed softly.

“But look at yourselves.”

Her eyes moved toward Damian.

“You became exactly what I predicted.”

Then Hazel.

“You became exactly what I trained.”

Then Michael.

“You became exactly what I needed.”

Silence.

Three people.

Three broken lives.

All connected by one person.

---

Damian looked at Hazel.

“Is it true?”

She knew what he meant.

“Were you sent to kill me?”

Hazel didn’t answer immediately.

That scared him.

Finally:

“Yes.”

Everyone froze.

Even Damian.

Hazel continued.

“When I first entered your office…”

A pause.

“That was the mission.”

Damian’s expression changed.

“But?”

Hazel looked down.

“But I failed.”

A bitter smile.

“I got to know you.”

---

Damian looked away.

That hurt more than he expected.

Because part of him still wondered.

Was any of it real?

Or was he just another assignment she failed to complete?

---

Clara interrupted.

“She didn’t fail.”

Everyone looked at the screen.

“She completed the mission.”

Hazel frowned.

“What?”

Clara smiled.

“Don’t you remember?”

A file appeared.

A document.

Hazel’s original assignment.

Target:

DAMIAN RUSSO

Objective:

GAIN TRUST.

WAIT FOR THE PERFECT MOMENT.

ELIMINATE.

Then another line appeared.

Completed:

TARGET DEVELOPED EMOTIONAL DEPENDENCE.

Damian froze.

Hazel stared.

Because that wasn’t her handwriting.

But it was her file.

---

Clara spoke.

“You were never meant to protect him.”

A pause.

“You were meant to become the person he trusted most…”

Her smile returned.

“So destroying him would hurt more.”

---

Damian looked at Hazel.

For a moment…

he saw every possibility.

Every lie.

Every moment she stood beside him.

Every time she saved him.

Every time she could have killed him.

But didn’t.

---

Then Hazel said something nobody expected.

Quietly.

Almost broken:

“She’s right.”

Damian looked at her.

Hazel continued:

“I was sent to destroy you.”

A pause.

“And I still don’t know why I couldn’t.”

---

The lights suddenly went out.

Again.

But this time…

nobody moved.

Because they all understood.

The darkness wasn’t an attack.

It was a distraction.

A sound came from the hallway.

Footsteps.

Slow.

Calm.

Someone entered.

Someone who should not be there.

Hazel turned.

Her face went pale.

Because she recognized the footsteps.

The same footsteps from twenty years ago.

A man she thought died.

A man who trained her.

A man who created her.

Elias whispered from the darkness:

“Hello, Hannah.”

May you like

A pause.

“Did you really think you were free?”
