CHAPTER 19 — THE TRUTH HIDDEN INSIDE THE LAST RECORDING

The video lasted less than two minutes.

But it destroyed twenty years of lies.

Nobody spoke after the screen went black.

Not Damian.

Not Hazel.

Not even Garrett.

Because everyone in that room had just witnessed something impossible.

Damian Russo had once been different.

And Hazel Brooks had never been his weakness.

She had been the reason he survived.

---

Damian stared at the blank monitor.

The words kept repeating.

SHE SAVED ME FIRST.

He wanted to reject it.

He wanted to say the video was manipulated.

Another trick.

Another game.

But he couldn't.

Because the person on the screen was him.

His voice.

His face.

His younger self.

A version of Damian he barely remembered.

A man who still believed protecting someone mattered more than power.

---

Hazel stood silently.

Damian looked at her.

For once, he didn't know what to say.

Not because he was angry.

Because every apology he could think of felt too small.

“I…”

The word stopped.

Hazel looked at him.

A strange expression crossed her face.

“You don't have to.”

Damian frowned.

“What?”

“Apologize.”

A pause.

“You'll just make it uncomfortable.”

For a second...

Damian almost smiled.

Almost.

“That's the first normal thing you've said to me.”

Hazel looked away.

“I was never very good at normal.”

---

The countdown continued.

03:21.

03:20.

Nobody moved.

Then Garrett broke the silence.

“Before we start having emotional breakthroughs…”

He pointed at the timer.

“We are still trapped inside a building.”

Everyone looked at the screen.

The reality returned.

Vivian was still watching.

The bomb was still active.

The game wasn't over.

---

The screen turned back on.

Vivian appeared.

But something was different.

Her confidence was gone.

Not completely.

But enough.

Because Hazel had done the one thing Vivian never expected.

She made her own choice.

“You changed.”

Vivian looked at Hazel.

Hazel stared back.

“Yes.”

A pause.

“I did.”

Vivian shook her head.

“No.”

Her voice became colder.

“You were damaged.”

Hazel stepped closer.

“You keep calling it damage.”

A pause.

“I call it surviving.”

---

Damian watched the exchange.

He realized something.

Vivian never saw people.

Only outcomes.

Only tools.

Only weapons.

That was why she could never understand Hazel.

Because Hazel was the one thing Vivian could not create.

A person with a choice.

---

02:45.

Garrett found the main control panel.

“I can open the emergency exits.”

Damian nodded.

“Do it.”

Garrett started typing.

Access denied.

He frowned.

“She's locked me out.”

Hazel looked at the system.

“Of course she did.”

Damian looked at her.

“Can you override it?”

Hazel was quiet.

Too quiet.

Damian noticed.

“What?”

She looked at the code.

“I can.”

“But?”

A pause.

“I need to go deeper.”

Garrett frowned.

“How deep?”

Hazel looked at the screen.

“Into Vivian's system.”

Nobody liked the answer.

Because everyone understood what that meant.

---

01:50.

Hazel connected the device.

Files appeared.

Hundreds.

Training records.

Assignments.

Names.

Photos.

Children.

Damian looked at the screen.

His expression changed.

Because this wasn't just about Hazel.

There were hundreds of others.

People who never escaped.

People who became weapons.

People nobody knew existed.

---

Victor looked at Elias.

Who had been silent the entire time.

“You knew.”

Elias didn't answer.

Victor stepped closer.

“You knew what she was doing.”

Finally, Elias spoke.

“Yes.”

Hazel looked at him.

“Why didn't you stop her?”

Elias looked at her.

A long pause.

“Because I was afraid.”

Nobody expected that.

Not from him.

Damian stared.

“You?”

Elias looked older suddenly.

“Yes.”

A pause.

“Because Vivian was worse than me.”

---

The confession shocked everyone.

Elias continued.

“I created monsters.”

He looked at Hazel.

“But she created a system.”

His eyes lowered.

“She didn't want soldiers.”

A pause.

“She wanted replacements.”

---

00:45.

The system started warning.

FINAL SECURITY LOCK.

Hazel typed faster.

Damian stood beside her.

“Can I help?”

She looked surprised.

“You?”

“Yes.”

“You don't know this system.”

“No.”

A pause.

“But I know people.”

For some reason…

that answer made her stop.

Then she moved aside.

“Okay.”

The word was simple.

But it meant something.

Trust.

---

00:30.

The system rejected another command.

Hazel frowned.

“She expected me.”

Damian looked at the screen.

“Then don't fight her.”

Hazel looked at him.

“What?”

“Do what she doesn't expect.”

Hazel stared.

“You're suggesting improvising?”

“Yes.”

“That is a terrible plan.”

Damian nodded.

“I know.”

A small pause.

“Those are usually my best ones.”

---

00:15.

Hazel entered one final command.

Not a shutdown.

A broadcast.

Garrett looked confused.

“What are you doing?”

“Showing everyone.”

The screen changed.

Every monitor in the Apex Building.

Every employee computer.

Every security screen.

The hidden files appeared.

Vivian's entire operation.

Exposed.

---

00:05.

Vivian stood up in her office.

For the first time...

she looked afraid.

“No.”

Hazel looked at the screen.

“You wanted everyone to see what I became.”

A pause.

“Now they see what you created.”

---

00:00.

The timer reached zero.

Everyone waited.

Nothing happened.

The lights returned.

The doors unlocked.

The building survived.

But Vivian didn't.

Because outside the Apex Building...

sirens appeared.

Hundreds of them.

Police.

Federal agents.

News cameras.

The world had just learned the truth.

---

Vivian stared at the screen.

Then smiled.

A small, disturbing smile.

Damian noticed.

“That wasn't her final move.”

Hazel looked at him.

“How do you know?”

Because Damian finally understood Vivian.

“She didn't lose.”

A pause.

“She changed the game.”

---

The screen behind Vivian turned on.

A single file appeared.

One file nobody had seen.

One file hidden deeper than all the others.

The title appeared:

PROJECT RUSSO

Damian froze.

Hazel looked at him.

And for the first time...

she was scared for him.

May you like

Because the next secret wasn't about her.

It was about him.
