CHAPTER 21 — THE MAN BEHIND DAMIAN RUSSO

The file was only one sentence.
But it broke the last piece of Damian Russo’s reality.
PRIMARY PURPOSE: ENSURE DAMIAN RUSSO NEVER REMEMBERS WHO HE REALLY IS.
Not who he became.
Not what he built.
Who he really was.
---
The room felt smaller.
The air felt heavier.
Damian stared at the screen.
Then at Hazel.
“You knew.”
Hazel’s face changed.
“No.”
“Don’t.”
His voice was quiet.
But dangerous.
“Not another secret.”
Hazel swallowed.
“I didn’t know.”
A pause.
“I knew there was something about you.”
She looked at the file.
“But not this.”
Damian looked away.
Because somehow…
that hurt more.
The one person who had always seemed to know everything…
was just as lost as he was.
---
Vivian watched them through the camera.
“You see the problem now?”
Damian looked at the screen.
“Shut up.”
Vivian smiled.
“You keep searching for the person who controlled you.”
A pause.
“But you never asked the most important question.”
Damian’s eyes narrowed.
“What question?”
Vivian leaned closer.
“Why were you worth controlling?”
---
Nobody spoke.
Because that was the question nobody had asked.
Not Michael.
Not Elias.
Not Hazel.
Not even Damian.
Why him?
Why did powerful people spend twenty years manipulating one man?
---
The file continued loading.
More documents appeared.
Medical records.
Family records.
Confidential reports.
Damian stepped closer.
Then stopped.
Because one name appeared repeatedly.
Not Russo.
Not Crane.
Not Brooks.
A different name.
ANGELO VALENTI.
Garrett looked confused.
“Who is that?”
Damian didn’t answer.
Because he knew.
Or thought he knew.
---
“My father.”
Everyone looked at him.
Damian stared at the screen.
“Angelo Valenti was my father’s name before Russo.”
Hazel frowned.
“You never told me that.”
Damian gave a bitter smile.
“Because I forgot.”
The room became silent.
---
Twenty-five years earlier.
Before Damian Russo.
Before the empire.
Before the fear.
There was a boy named Damian Valenti.
A boy who hated violence.
A boy who wanted nothing to do with his family’s criminal world.
His father wanted something different for him.
Not power.
Not control.
A normal life.
But normal was never an option.
---
The memory returned.
A young Damian standing outside a house.
His father kneeling beside him.
“Listen to me.”
Young Damian looked angry.
“I don’t want this.”
His father smiled sadly.
“Good.”
A pause.
“Never want this.”
Damian looked confused.
“Then why are you teaching me?”
His father looked toward the street.
“Because one day…”
A pause.
“Someone will try to make you believe this is all you are.”
---
Back in the present.
Damian stepped away from the screen.
“My father knew.”
Hazel looked at him.
“Knew what?”
“That someone was coming.”
A pause.
“That someone would try to turn me into something.”
---
Garrett opened another document.
His face changed.
“Damian.”
“What?”
“This was signed by your father.”
Damian looked at the screen.
The document was old.
Almost destroyed.
But the signature was clear.
Angelo Valenti.
The title:
GUARDIAN PROTOCOL.
---
Hazel read the first line.
“Protect subject from psychological manipulation.”
Her eyes widened.
“Subject?”
Damian looked at the document.
“Me.”
---
The truth slowly appeared.
Damian was never chosen because he was weak.
He was chosen because he was different.
His father had noticed something.
A rare ability.
Damian could read people.
Understand motives.
Predict behavior.
A gift.
But also a danger.
Because someone with that ability could become extremely powerful.
Or extremely dangerous.
---
Vivian interrupted.
“Your father tried to hide you.”
Damian looked at the screen.
“He failed.”
“No.”
A pause.
“He succeeded.”
Everyone froze.
Vivian smiled.
“That’s why you’re still alive.”
---
The screen changed.
A final recording appeared.
Angelo Valenti.
Older.
Tired.
Speaking directly into the camera.
Damian couldn't move.
His father’s voice filled the room.
“If you are watching this…”
A pause.
“Then they found you.”
Damian’s expression changed.
His father continued.
“They will tell you that you are special.”
A small breath.
“They will tell you that you were chosen.”
The old man looked directly into the camera.
“Don’t believe them.”
Silence.
“Power is not what makes you valuable.”
A pause.
“Your ability to care is.”
---
Damian looked down.
Because those words sounded impossible.
Almost childish.
Care.
Compassion.
Trust.
The exact things he had spent decades destroying.
---
The recording continued.
“I know you will become angry.”
A sad smile.
“You always were.”
Damian almost laughed.
Almost.
“But anger is easy.”
His father looked away.
“Forgiveness is harder.”
---
Then the recording ended.
Nobody moved.
For once…
Damian Russo had no response.
---
Hazel stepped closer.
“Your father knew who you would become.”
Damian looked at her.
“Yes.”
A pause.
“And he was afraid.”
Hazel shook her head.
“No.”
She looked at him.
“He was hopeful.”
---
A sudden alarm interrupted them.
Garrett checked the system.
His face changed.
“What?”
He looked toward the cameras.
“We have movement.”
Damian reached for his weapon.
“Where?”
Garrett looked at the screen.
Then went silent.
“Everywhere.”
---
The cameras switched.
One by one.
Across the city.
Different locations.
Different buildings.
Different people.
All connected.
A hidden network.
Waiting.
Damian stared.
“This isn’t an attack.”
Hazel looked at him.
“Then what is it?”
Damian watched the screens.
And finally understood.
“They’re coming out.”
---
Vivian smiled through the camera.
“The world is about to meet the real Damian Russo.”
A pause.
“And they will decide whether he deserves to survive.”
The screens changed again.
A live broadcast began.
Millions of people started watching.
Every secret.
Every crime.
Every lie.
May you like
About Damian Russo…
was about to become public.
