Chapter 6 - THE MAN WHO CONTROLLED THE TRUST

For three days, I kept asking myself the same question.
How could so many people I loved look at my unborn daughter and see a problem they needed to remove?
I couldnât understand it.
I didnât want to understand it.
Because understanding meant accepting the truth.
My own family had been planning against me.
The detective sat across from Daniel and me in a small hospital conference room.
His name was Detective Harris.
He placed a folder on the table.
âThe lawyerâs name is Michael Reeves.â
I immediately recognized it.
âMr. Reeves?â
I looked at Daniel.
âHe worked with my grandfather for years.â
Detective Harris nodded.
âExactly.â
âThat doesnât make sense. My grandfather trusted him.â
âYour grandfather trusted him before he died.â
The detective opened the folder.
Inside were financial records.
Transfers.
Private meetings.
Emails.
âMr. Reeves had access to the trust documents before anyone else.â
Daniel studied the papers.
âHe could influence who received the money.â
âYes.â
I felt a knot forming in my stomach.
âSo he helped Rachel?â
Detective Harris shook his head.
âNot exactly.â
âWhat does that mean?â
He leaned forward.
âHe didnât help Rachel get the money.â
A pause.
âHe helped your family believe they could get away with taking it.â
The room went silent.
Then Daniel asked:
âWhy?â
The detective looked at me.
âBecause your grandfather added one unusual condition.â
I frowned.
âWhat condition?â
âIf your child was born into a safe and stable environment, the trust would belong completely to her.â
My heart sank.
âBut if there was evidence that the parents were unfitâŠâ
Danielâs expression changed.
âThe trust could be challenged.â
Detective Harris nodded.
âThatâs what they were trying to create.â
Suddenly everything made sense.
The arguments.
The accusations.
The way my mother always said I was âtoo emotional.â
The way Rachel kept telling people I was selfish.
They werenât just attacking me.
They were building a story.
A story where I looked unstable.
A story where they could convince a court my daughter needed someone else.
Someone like them.
My hands trembled.
âThey wanted to make me look like a bad mother.â
âYes.â
Daniel stood up.
His voice was cold.
âThey tried to hurt a pregnant woman and then use the damage they caused as evidence against her.â
Detective Harris nodded.
âThatâs exactly what happened.â
Then his phone rang.
He answered.
His face immediately changed.
âWhat?â
He listened.
Then slowly looked at us.
âMichael Reeves disappeared.â
My blood ran cold.
âWhat do you mean disappeared?â
âHe left his office two hours ago.â
âAnd?â
Detective Harris hesitated.
âHe left behind a note.â
Daniel stepped closer.
âWhat did it say?â
The detective looked down.
âHe wroteâŠâ

A pause.
âI was only following orders.â
