Chapter 12 - THE LAST PERSON I EXPECTED

The betrayal never seemed to end.

Every time I thought we had reached the truth

Another secret appeared.

Detective Harris gathered everyone involved.

“We have a leak.”

Daniel crossed his arms.

“Someone is feeding information to Margaret.”

The detective nodded.

“We believe that person has access to evidence.”

My heart sank.

“Could they hurt my baby?”

Nobody answered quickly.

And that was answer enough.

That night, I refused to sleep.

Daniel stayed beside me.

“You need rest.”

“I can’t.”

He looked at me.

“Emily.”

I shook my head.

“Every time I close my eyes, I see the grass.”

I touched my stomach.

“I see her lying there with me.”

Daniel’s eyes filled with pain.

“I should have protected you.”

“You did.”

“No.”

His voice cracked.

“I should have seen what was happening sooner.”

Before I could answer, the hospital lights suddenly went out.

Everything became dark.

Then the emergency alarms started.

My heart raced.

Daniel immediately stood.

“Stay here.”

“No.”

I grabbed his hand.

“I’m not letting you leave me.”

A few seconds later, the backup lights turned on.

A nurse rushed into the room.

“Mrs. Carter, you need to come with me.”

Daniel stepped forward.

“Why?”

The nurse looked nervous.

“There was an incident downstairs.”

“What kind of incident?”

She hesitated.

“Your father was found unconscious.”

My blood froze.

“What?”

We rushed downstairs.

Police surrounded the area.

Detective Harris looked at us.

“Someone attacked him.”

Daniel frowned.

“Margaret?”

The detective shook his head.

“No.”

He looked at me.

“The person who attacked your father left a message.”

My hands went cold.

“What message?”

He handed me a piece of paper.

Four words.

YOU WERE THE WRONG CHILD.

I stared at it.

And suddenly I understood.

May you like

This was never only about my daughter.

It was about me.
