Chapter 4 - MY SISTER’S PERFECT LIE

Rachel arrived at the hospital two hours later.

And somehow

She looked like the victim.

Her hair was messy.

Her eyes were red.

She carried a small bag of flowers.

Anyone who didn’t know the truth would have felt sorry for her.

That was always Rachel’s talent.

She could break a window and convince everyone she was the one who got cut.

She stopped outside my room.

“Emily
”

I stared at her.

The woman standing there was my sister.

The person I grew up with.

The person who used to sleep beside me when thunderstorms scared us as children.

And now she was the person who kicked my unborn daughter.

“I just want to explain.”

Daniel stepped between us.

“No.”

Rachel looked at him.

“You don’t understand.”

“I understand enough.”

She started crying.

“I made a mistake.”

I laughed quietly.

“A mistake is forgetting someone’s birthday.”

Her face tightened.

“I was angry.”

“You kicked me.”

“I didn’t mean for it to happen.”

“But you did.”

She looked at my stomach.

And for one second, I saw something.

Not sadness.

Not guilt.

Fear.

She was afraid.

Because the truth was coming out.

“You’re going to ruin everything,” she whispered.

Daniel heard her.

“What did you say?”

Rachel immediately changed her expression.

“I mean
 you’re ruining our family.”

“No,” Daniel said.

“You did that when you decided money was worth hurting your sister.”

Her eyes narrowed.

“You think you’re better than us.”

There it was.

The same sentence she screamed before attacking me.

“You always thought you were special.”

I stared at her.

“Because I married someone who loves me?”

Her face turned red.

“Because you got everything!”

“Everything?”

I almost couldn’t believe her.

“I lost a baby before this one.”

Rachel went quiet.

“You weren’t there.”

“I was busy.”

“Yes.”

I felt tears forming.

“You were always busy when I needed you.”

For a moment, she looked almost human.

Almost sorry.

Then her phone rang.

She glanced at the screen.

And quickly turned away.

But Daniel saw the name.

“Mom.”

Rachel froze.

Daniel picked up his phone and started recording.

“Answer it.”

She stared at him.

“What?”

“Answer the call.”

She refused.

Daniel smiled coldly.

“Interesting.”

“What?”

“You’re not worried about talking to your mother.”

A pause.

“You’re worried about what she might say.”

Rachel’s face changed.

May you like

And that was when we knew.

My sister wasn’t working alone.
