Chapter 11 - THE CHOICE THAT BROKE MY FAMILY

My father’s voice sounded different.

Small.

Weak.

Like a man who finally realized he had lost control.

“Emily, please listen.”

I almost couldn’t believe him.

The same man who stood in the backyard.

The same man who tried to take the recording.

Now he wanted me to listen.

“Why should I?”

Silence.

Then he said:

“I made mistakes.”

I laughed bitterly.

“Mistakes?”

My voice shook.

“You helped them.”

“I thought I was protecting the family.”

“You were protecting money.”

He didn’t answer.

Because he knew it was true.

Margaret took the phone again.

“Your father understands reality.”

I stared at the screen.

“What do you want?”

“A conversation.”

“You don’t get to ask me for anything.”

Margaret sighed.

“You’re emotional.”

There it was.

The same weapon they had always used.

Making me seem unstable.

Making me seem weak.

But I was done.

“No.”

My voice became steady.

“I’m a mother.”

Silence.

“And I will protect my daughter.”

For the first time, Margaret sounded angry.

“You have no idea what you’re fighting.”

“I know exactly what I’m fighting.”

I looked at Daniel.

“A family that thinks love can be bought.”

Margaret ended the call.

But before she did, she said one final thing.

“Ask your husband why he never told you about the accident.”

My heart stopped.

“What accident?”

The call ended.

I turned toward Daniel.

He looked away.

And that scared me.

“Daniel?”

He didn’t speak.

“Tell me.”

Finally, he sat down.

“There’s something I should have told you.”

My stomach tightened.

“What?”

“Before we met
”

He took a deep breath.

“I investigated your family.”

I stared at him.

“Why?”

“Because of a business case.”

“And?”

He looked at me.

“I found evidence your family had been hiding money.”

I felt confused.

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

“Because I thought it would destroy you.”

A tear rolled down my cheek.

“Daniel
”

“I was wrong.”

Before I could answer, his phone rang.

Detective Harris.

Daniel answered.

Then his face changed.

“What happened?”

A pause.

Then:

“Margaret escaped.”

I stood up.

“How?”

The detective’s voice came through the speaker.

“She had help.”

Daniel looked at me.

“From someone inside our investigation.”
