Chapter 5 - THE PERSON BEHIND EVERYTHING

The police arrived the next morning.

But they didn’t come for Rachel.

Not yet.

They came because they found something much bigger.

A hidden bank account.

A second phone.

And messages that connected three people.

My sister.

My mother.

And someone I never expected.

My father.

I stared at the detective.

“My father?”

He nodded.

“We believe your family has been discussing the trust for months.”

I felt numb.

My entire life, I thought my parents protected me.

I thought family meant standing together.

But apparently, my family stood together only when they wanted something from me.

Daniel sat beside me.

“What did they find?”

The detective placed a folder on the table.

“Your father contacted a financial advisor six months ago.”

“For what?”

“To ask how the trust could be transferred before your daughter’s birth.”

My hands tightened.

“That’s impossible.”

The detective looked at me.

“Your father asked the same question.”

I looked at Daniel.

He didn’t say anything.

Because he knew.

I wasn’t ready to hear the rest.

The detective opened another file.

“There’s more.”

Inside were printed messages.

One message from my mother.

One from Rachel.

One from my father.

The conversation was short.

But it destroyed everything.

Rachel:

“She won’t give up the baby.”

My mother:

“She never listens.”

My father:

“Then we need another solution.”

I covered my mouth.

My family wasn’t trying to scare me.

They weren’t trying to manipulate me.

They were planning.

Planning around my child.

Planning around my future.

Planning around my death.

The detective continued.

“We also found evidence someone tampered with your car last month.”

I froze.

“My car?”

Daniel grabbed my hand.

“When?”

“Three weeks before the attack.”

The same time Rachel started asking about the trust.

The same time my mother began pressuring me to move back home.

The same time my father suddenly became interested in my pregnancy.

Everything connected.

Then the detective received a phone call.

He listened.

His expression changed.

“Are you sure?”

A pause.

Then he looked directly at me.

“Rachel is trying to leave the state.”

My heart dropped.

“Why?”

The detective slowly answered.

“Because we found the person who gave her instructions.”

I held my breath.

“Who?”

He placed the phone down.

And said the name I never expected.

“Your grandfather’s lawyer.”

The man who created the trust.

The man who was supposed to protect my daughter.

The man who had been advising my family all along.

And suddenly I realized

The attack in the backyard was only the beginning.

Someone had been planning this long before my sister ever raised her foot.
